Enjoy this article as part of the Alliance Summer Reading Series! We've curated the best Science Philanthropy Alliance blog articles of the last few years so you can learn more about science philanthropy and the important work we and our members do to impact the world around us. This article by The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, an Alliance member, illustrates how to create a fellowship program in science and engineering that embodies creativity, freedom, and innovation. Now in its 35th year, we celebrate the late David Packard, who was inspired to create a program that helps early career researchers and the many successes it gave rise to. Philanthropists want to make an impact on society and science, and we celebrate their efforts! https://lnkd.in/gUnBGgWX #summerreading #science #philanthropy #fellowships

🚨 Research note of the WEEK! 🚨 How can we strengthen engagement with #philanthropic #foundations? 📄 The authors suggest using a distinct approach to advance our theoretical understanding of philanthropic institutions, known as ‘foundations’. They propose employing spectrality – a lens that enables exploration of significant #social, #ethical, and #political questions of influence and nuance, historical rationales, individuals, practices, and perspectives that may not be overtly apparent, explicitly stated, or even grounded in the present but nonetheless influence how foundations are established, their impact, operations, and how they are perceived. They propose and critically explore spectrality as a strategic platform from which to develop more robust theories concerning philanthropic foundations as a distinct institutional form. ✒Authors: Tobias Jung (University of St Andrews) and Kevin Orr (University of St Andrews) 📝 Provided by: Maliha Hasan from the University of Toronto 🔊 This Research Note is included in the #Philanthropisms podcast (Why Philanthropy Matters) hosted by Rhodri Davies. 🚨 Research note of the WEEK! 🚨 Philanthropic foundations in the global policy arena 📄 This article offers a critical examination of how foundations shape global policy and introduces a theoretical framework to analyse their influence in this domain. The key question can be expressed as follows: ‘How do philanthropic foundations influence the global policy arena?’ The authors conclude that the work of foundations in the global policy arena, which is fluid but influential, dampens the influence of external. This should remind scholars of the relevance of exploring the potential promises and problems of philanthropy’s role in policy shaping. ✒ Author(s): Janis Petzinger, Ph.D. – University of St Andrews | Tobias Jung – University of St. Andrews | Kevin Orr – University of St. Andrews 📝 The Research note is written by Raquel Campos Franco from Universidade Católica Portuguesa 🔔 More research notes! Specialist in driving transformative change with expertise in research, organizational development, systems change, fostering collaboration, strategic governance, and holistic leadership for sustainability.
From my experience in working with governments, philanthropists, NGOs and the private sector, I have observed that a common mistake philantropists and others make, is to view a problem through a narrow lens, find a solution and then try to take the solution to scale for impact. In reality, we need to rather focus on building a supportive network for communities by ensuring inclusivity at every level and build the agency of people through the process together. This drives a congruency of purpose towards the systems change we need. See the Community Ownership model I have proposed and most often use in my work - just published by NORRAG.
