Who will be the next Vannevar Bush? The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine President Marcia McNutt paid homage to Vannevar Bush during her excellent State of Science Address. Bush was largely responsible for America's scientific excellence and leadership in the 20th Century. His report, Science: The Endless Frontier, was Bush’s blueprint for organizing government support for university-based research. Read more about his work here: https://lnkd.in/gRnqYRVd

We are excited to announce that on Monday 20 November Andrew Preston (Cambridge University) will lead the third session of the Seminar Series on Modern North American History, organized in cooperation with the Sciences Po Center for History (CHSP) in Paris. In his talk, Andrew Preston will share insights on his current research project. Historians are increasingly in agreement that American "national security" is not a timeless concept or a neutral descriptor of US foreign and military policies. It has a political, conceptual, and ideological history of its own that only recently has started to come to light. But where did it come from? Did it develop as a reaction to external crises, or was there something more to it? Drawing directly from a draft chapter from his forthcoming book The Invention of National Security, Preston will explain how the concept was a product of the late 1930s-early 1940s, but just as much for domestic reasons, rooted in political economy and social security, than as a reaction to the growing world crisis. You can attend his lecture, titled From Planning to Strategy: New Deal Liberalism and the Invention of National Security in person at Sciences Po-Paris or join online from 17:00 to 18:30 CET. Financial literacy is crucial for ending poverty, as Nobel Prize winner Sir Arthur Lewis emphasized with his quote, "The fundamental cure for poverty is not money but knowledge." By teaching people how to budget, save, invest, and manage credit, we empower them to make informed financial decisions, avoid debt, and build wealth. This knowledge not only benefits individuals but also strengthens communities and economies. Investing in financial education helps create a more stable and prosperous society, breaking the cycle of poverty through informed and responsible financial practices.
Sir Arthur Lewis originally wanted to be an engineer but as a young man in Saint Lucia, a British colony, in the 1930s he was not able to because of the colour of his skin. Instead, Lewis went on to study economics. He was particularly interested in the problems of developing countries and in 1979 was awarded the prize in economic sciences for pioneering research in this area. Learn more: https://bit.ly/37xisu1

To deepen our understanding of today's rapidly changing landscape of violent conflict, we must look to the past. At the recent #SecurityinContext conference at UC Santa Barbara, I had the privilege of exploring the field-shaping legacies of the Social Science Research Council-MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Program on International Peace and Security (1982-2002) with former IPS fellows and committee members, alongside UCSB Dean Charlie Hale. This program's support for granular, context-based research in conflict areas was formative for individual scholarly trajectories and critical to widening security studies in the 1980s/90s. Let's aim for a similarly transformative research agenda to advance our understanding of today's complex challenges. #research #conflictstudies
