🔬Case study: The Lighting Point Restoration Project 📍Alabama, USA Aimed at creating diverse habitats to support a wide range of fish, shellfish, birds, and other #wildlife, the Lighting Point Restoration Project protects this important waterfront area of Bayou La Batre while preserving the fishing community culture. A habitat mimicking nearby natural coastal marshes and barrier islands was constructed in a bid to defend the Bayou La Batre area from storms and weather events, while simultaneously protecting local nature. Now two years post-construction, the project has buffered Bayou la Batre from five named storms, protecting the shoreline, working waterfront, and minimizing impacts to the community and businesses. This is another example of how implementing #NatureBasedSolutions can offer local communities and biodiversity an increased level of resilience to the ongoing #ClimateCrisis. Exciting Update for World Oceans Day 2024! Our partner, Reef Restoration Foundation is thrilled to announce the modification of coral nurseries at Fitzroy Island and Moore Reef sites. Through strategic action and innovative techniques, we are now building and preserving spawning stock in mobile midwater nurseries. This approach aims to introduce hundreds of millions of coral larvae to the ecosystem annually. The impact of this methodology shift is truly significant, as we continue to scale up the project, continuing to increase its positive outcomes. CEO, Ryan Donnelly, says the shift to using the midwater coral ‘trees’ as spawning ‘forests’ is just the first step in a rapidly evolving program that will grow exponentially in the next couple of years. We'd like to acknowledge the organisations that have contributed to the Moore Reef recovery site: Coles Group, Costa, Gilmac Pty Ltd, Kalgin Global Logistics & Mondiale VGL. #WorldOceansDay #ProtectOurOceans #OceanConservation #MarineLife #SaveOurSeas #HealthyOceans #OceanAwareness #LifeBelowWater #Actingforplanet #UNSDGs #Oceania #Australia 🐠🌿🌏

Many dams that were built during the industrial revolution emerged from the need for resources such as grain, paper, and other materials. Overtime, the functionality of these barriers have become obsolete due to the discovery of more advanced production methods, and they are now posing an irritant to natural habitats and blocking migration pathways for many species. This is why many natural resource trustee agencies look to have these barriers taken down. To learn more about the removal of these barriers, Our Shared Waters: A Look at the Delaware River Basin conducted an interview with representatives of Brandywine River Restoration Trust, Musconetcong Watershed Association , and Wildlands Conservancy PA. These organizations are currently working on restoration projects along the Delaware River Basin, including the Finesville and Bushkill Dam removals; two projects that were designed and led by our team.

Enabling river restoration projects at scale means working through multiple partnerships, such as the Drinking Water Providers Partnership (of which The Freshwater Trust is a collaborator). #DrinkingWaterProvidersPartnership #NatureBasedSolutions #watershedrestoration
We are proud to present another excellent Drinking Water Providers Partnership Program's project - Restoration of the South Fork Little Butte Creek River Mile 7.6 by the Rogue River Watershed Council. Call for applications! We are now accepting applications for the 2024 DWPP! Applications are due January 5, 2024. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/gKZiSMnf Rogue River Watershed Council and Medford Water Commission enhanced secondary stream channels, placed large wood in strategic locations, rehabilitated riparian vegetation. These actions work to restore stream processes and floodplain interaction that improves water quality, stream temperature, and fish habitat. The Drinking Water Providers Partnership is a collaboration of the Geos Institute, U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Washington State Department of Health, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Land Management, The Freshwater Trust, and WildEarth Guardians. Additional support for this project: Jackson Soil & Water Conservation District, The Middle Rogue Steelheaders, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, Wild Salmon Center, and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. . #CommunityAction #climatechangesolutions #climatechangeaction #DrinkingWaterProvidersPartnership #drinkingwaterprovider #NatureBasedSolutions #CleanWater #cleanwaterways #CleanDrinkingWater #waterquality #watershedrestoration #funding

Protecting and restoring coastal and oceanic biodiversity is critical to our survival as healthy oceans support all life on earth.
Tomorrow at the Blue Earth Summit the (unmissable) session from 17:00-18:00 on the the Futures Stage is 'Coastal restoration: Protecting the ocean so it can protect us.' Hear from Seawilding, Câr-Y-Môr, Moshi Moshi and Patagonia as they discuss how we can revive our ocean. A number of communities are showing us the way. So here is a throwback to 2021 and the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Enjoy 'Seawilding Scotland', a film by the incredible Lewis Jefferies. https://lnkd.in/eST9KASw

It's an early and cold start in the January sunshine for our Project Officers this week. Our latest restoration site for the season kickstarting as I type. This site has a lot going on: 💧It's a really key one for water. Our work will help raise and stabilize the water table in the peat, slowing the flow of water (and aiming to reduce carbon runoff) into a crucial water body. 🌄It's a large landholding, we're working on over 200hecatres. 🔍The peat of the site is severely damaged due to cumulative impacts of tin streaming, peat cutting, drainage and overgrazing. 🧭There are really interesting and important historic, even Bronze Age features in the area. We'll be excluding from our works and using buffer zones. 🐾A lot of potential for wildlife on this site as we intend to use willow bundles and catchment woodland creation to diversify habitat, as well as stabilize the edges of eroding peat. 🌳There's also a lot of great work taking place in the catchment by #SWLakes for water, wildlife and local people. Watch this space. Latest location for crucial peatland restoration works taking place on Dartmoor to come this week...
