As we observe Memorial Day, we are reminded of the profound sacrifices made by countless men and women in uniform who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms. This day is not just a long weekend; it is a solemn tribute to the valor and dedication of our servicemembers who have paid the ultimate price for the values we hold dear. Their courage and commitment are at the heart of what many refer to as American Exceptionalism. This notion encompasses the idea that the United States, founded on principles of liberty, democracy, and equality, holds a unique place in history. It suggests that our country has a distinct role in advancing freedom and justice around the world. American Exceptionalism is not merely a boastful claim; it is a call to action. It compels us to uphold the ideals that our fallen heroes fought for, ensuring that their legacy lives on through our actions and policies. It challenges us to strive for excellence, to innovate, and to lead with integrity and compassion on the global stage. As we enjoy the freedoms and opportunities provided by living in this exceptional nation, let’s take a moment to honor those who made it possible. May we remember that the bedrock of our exceptionalism is built upon the sacrifices of those who served. #memorialday #armedforces #investing #insurance

More and more young people are being recruited into the armed forces to fight conflicts. We know many sadly die in conflict, from trauma related addictions and many are made homeless. We know and love people with these experiences in our communities and families. Revealing a true picture is skewed for reasons including scattered data and the lack of specialist care. According to Sir Andrew Gregory, chief executive of forces charity SSAFA, the issues facing veterans often stem from difficulties in adapting to civilian life after years spent with a regimented lifestyle where many day-to-day tasks are already taken care of. This can then result in the “eight Ds”: drink, debt, drugs, divorce, depression, domestic violence, dependency culture, and digs, meaning accommodation. #bigissue #youth #eightds

MEMORIAL DAY “Freedom Is Not Free” Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season. Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars, including World War II, The Vietnam War, The Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. Some people wear a red poppy in remembrance of those fallen in war—a tradition that began with a World War I poem. On a less somber note, many people take weekend trips or throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because Memorial Day weekend—the long weekend comprising the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Memorial Day itself—unofficially marks the beginning of summer.
