🚀 Calling all startup founders! 🚀 Amidst everything else you’re dealing with (securing funding, hiring your founding team, developing and implementing the overall company strategy and vision, full-funnel selling…) someone might have casually said the words ‘content strategy’ to you. Okay, maybe not those exact words, but when thinking of your GTM strategy, content is a main part of the foundation. If it’s rocky, your GTM structure could crumble. A few things to think about before you kick the content strategy can down the road. Think of your content as the bridge between your product/service and your audience. Knowing who you’re serving, how, and why + where they hang out online (and off) will help you create content that resonates and starts to build meaningful connections. The good ol’ know, like, and trust factor. Regardless of your industry, my bet is that you’re dealing with a crowded marketplace. Building trust and authority isn’t just key for SEO (more on that in an upcoming post), but without it, you’re dead in the water when attempting to penetrate your target market. Consistently (key word is consistent) delivering content that is truly valuable and supports your audience (through a solution or even just a chuckle to get through the day) establishes authority and builds trust with potential customers. A well-crafted content strategy informs the creation of great content, but also drives tangible results toward business objectives. You choose - brand awareness, website traffic, lead conversion - your content should align throughout the organization. When your content strategy evolves along with the vision and goals, your business will stay ahead of the game. Trends in industry, consumer behavior, emerging tech - all of these can be tailored to content pieces to keep your company relevant. An evolving content strategy includes a dynamic roadmap that should be evaluated regularly. Part of that review is measuring agreed upon key metrics (1-2 KPIs to start) and analyzing performance data to see what you should double-down on and what needs course correction. 80% of founders, including me, make this one big mistake. They decide to do everything on their own. Now you’ll say, isn’t a bootstrapped start-up built entirely on the shoulders of the founders? When you have no money, you have no choice, right? Well, think about it in terms of opportunity cost. The first few months, while I worked with the tech team and lifted Odanta off the ground, I hired a freelancer to make all my social media content. I’ve always said that having young, hungry people on your team is essential in getting your start-up from 0 to 1. Their work is always exceptional and they aren’t very expensive. 🤪 Sure, I spent some money paying them, but it also gave me enough time to focus on all my other million responsibilities, including planning for the future. But after a few months, the graphic designer moved on to other projects and while I found a replacement, I decided to take up his job. We were trying our best to raise capital at that point, and I was counting every penny. Our bottom line would breathe a sigh of relief if we spent a little less. Contrary to what you’d think, it was an amazing experience. I learnt video editing, sound mixing, graphic designing all on my own. The ultimate hustle. But my other responsibilities would be pushed to another day. I would block out time which could have been used for outreach or strategising. I forgot that a founder’s time is even more important than his money.   The moral of the story is that you must spend wisely. Of course, you’ll start off with very little capital. If that’s the case then, choose your battles. Don’t spend a lot of money to craft an aesthetic social media presence, or onboard influencers with 100k followers. Focus only on what makes or breaks your company. And the moment your start-up has some money flowing in, delegate. I have a personal rule to partner exclusively with top-tier agencies or exceptional one-man shops. Nothing in between. Throughout my career, I have worked with many agencies, and the experiences haven't always lived up to my expectations. This is what I think most startups want: - Transparent, cost-effective pricing - Flexible month-to-month contract - Fast execution - Ability to experiment with any channel - Full stack team (strategy, ads, creative, reporting) - A partner who can work straight out of our Slack What startups get: - High fees and complex pricing - Long binding contracts - Weeks of onboarding - Lured in by an impressive agency founder only to be handed off to an inexperienced team after signing - Tons of meetings and just general slowness - I often find myself knowing the target channels better than the agency's team What has worked for you when choosing great agencies?

I grew an ed-tech startup from 0 to 1 crore in revenue in 1.5 years, but I still consider myself a failure. Let's find out why. After investing 1000+ days in digital marketing, I've realized that digital marketing is all about 'analysis'. Whether analyzing your ad performance, copywriting, creative elements, or landing pages. Let me share my failure story with you. A few years ago, I started working with a startup. Before joining, their sales were almost zero. However, once we began working together, we tested offers and creative aggressively. Eventually, we found our winning offer, creative, and copy. By consistently using the same copy and creative, we generated thousands of leads. Within one year, the company's revenue was in the crores, and we were running the business profitably. I remember that after 1.5 years, things went wrong. Our CPL was very high, and we struggled to generate enough leads. Our winning copy and creative were not performing as expected. I tested many things, but we did not get the results we anticipated. Additionally, there was a lot of pressure from management. After that, we lost that client, and what was my mistake? No analysis. - We didn't ask why this copy was performing and why others were not. - Why were people giving us their important details? - Why were people buying from us? - Sometimes we saw high CPM, but we didn't try to analyze why the CPM was high that day. That's why I said in the beginning that Google or Facebook ads are just tools. What I do now is spend lots of time on analysis. We keep a record of everything, including our failures as well as our successes, and of course, we still conduct aggressive testing. #paidmedia

Sink or Swim with Solo Marketing Leaders? This week, I crossed paths with the founder of an early-stage B2B startup. The story of their marketing fiasco is a lesson for all entrepreneurs out there. 1. The Misstep: They roped in an experienced marketing director. A heavy investment, but they believed in the power of a single leader. 2. The Spiral: The director, albeit experienced, found himself in deep waters. He realized he needed more resources and demanded a larger media budget and external agencies' involvement. 3. The Aftermath: After 8 long months and $100K later, the startup found itself at square one. No tangible results to show for the enormous investment. If you're putting all your marketing eggs in one basket like this, you're doing it wrong. Here's why: 1. Limited Skillset: Even the most competent individuals have limitations. They can't possibly master all aspects of marketing and stay updated with the ever-evolving trends. 2. Dependency: One person holds the reins to your marketing efforts. Their mistakes and shortcomings become yours. 3. Cost-Effectiveness: Hiring a marketing director and then funding their demands for external agencies can burn a hole in your pocket, without any guarantee of success. Now, imagine an alternative scenario. You invest in a high-experienced full-stack agency. 1. Diverse Expertise: An agency is a pool of talent. You have access to a team of experts, each excelling in different marketing aspects. 2. Shared Responsibility: With an agency, the burden isn't on one person's shoulders. The responsibility is shared, and so are the risks. 3. Value for Money: You pay for a package of services, with a clear understanding of what you're getting in return. The chances of unexpected monetary demands are slim. The message is clear. Ditch the old-school approach of relying on one marketing leader. A SaaS Startup reached out to me a few weeks back and they needed help in building recognition around their product. (we don't just write content and call it a brand) So, what do we do instead? 1.
