💯Contrary to common belief the best mentors are NOT the most senior; they’re just a step or two ahead of you… 👉 They make fewer assumptions 👉 They are more attentive to the steps you’re following 👉 They have more relevant information 👉 They are more up to date 👉 They are more relatable. #mentorship
Everyone will give you advice, but the best people to learn practical lessons from are the ones who are barely ahead of you. They have the freshest context, they're completely current, and their memory hasn’t built up its own mythology yet.

I was talking to my old “combat Chaplain”….the gent who always came up to the Bridge every night, integrated a parable into the evening prayer, then circled back to me to tell me how the parable connected to my job as a leader of men and women….of all ages, races, sexual persuasions, and untold emotional baggage that would, at some point, make itself known if we were not in front of it, person-by-person. I want to share some of these parables with you, and how they expanded my role in making “my” people better than they ever dreamed. As a predicate to these stories that I would like to share the dialogue Chaps and I had today. It was about how much “love” matteres as one approaches the ultimate success of each of my people. Chaps surmised that if we love someone, we want them to experience the fruits of their labor in every imaginable way; to feel beautiful about themselves…to realize that their lives matter; to feel fulfilled in every way, or at least know what has to done and believe that his or her leadership team will be there, side-by-side, for the ride; to experience and be made aware of life changing events that redefined their personal “art-of-the-possible”. Chaps opined that if you love someone, you have a responsibility to teach…to be the best role model ever, and that “what” we teach, and “how” we teach are critical to our impact in the short and long terms. Lastly, he brought into context my job as a leader of Patriots and Warriors - that being my role as Sentinel for each person, and my tribe(s). I am not sure I thought of my leadership role in this context. But it is what we all do - to hold the line regarding what is right; to be the protector of our values, and to empower each person to actively participate while holding everyone accountable to our standards. Parables inbound.

I help teams get un-stuck | Organizational Development | Leader, Problem Solver, and Coach | 200+ Trainings Led | Obstacles are my inspiration
What does it mean to be true to yourself, especially as a #jobseeker? One of my mentors today suggested taking a strengths inventory to help me develop my brand. After answering 240 questions, I received a list of 5 strengths that stood out above the rest. Some of these, I knew already. Some of them, perhaps I felt, but wouldn't have been able to put into words. One of my strengths listed was authenticity. I actually created this post last night. Then I deleted it 17 minutes later. But something this afternoon compels me to make the post anyway. So even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, here I am, baring my true self. I'm #lookingforopportunities in a tough job market, and looking to make a career transition, no less. I know I have gaps; I don't have the certifications (yet!), I haven't been in a corporate or business setting (yet!), and I have never had to search for a career in which I have very few professional contacts or connections. I don't have a social media plan or format for creating my posts. I don't have a degree in my field of interest. I have only heard one person say that it could be a strong idea to come out of the gate in a job search by acknowledging these short-comings (...this advice came from Adam Grant ...in a book...not personally to me). What I do have, however, is how well I know my authentic self. ✅ I am an avid learner. I will take way more training and professional development than is required, and I am reading the books written by those shaping my desired field. ✅ I am a curious problem-solver. Puzzles and challenges excited me. ✅ I live for continuous improvement. Tweaking and refining things to make them better drives me. ✅ I am perceptive. I notice the little hidden things it usually takes others a while to see. ✅ I consider my background in the arts to be a hidden super power. It has given me more than two decades of commitment to high standards, attention to detail, and continual self improvement. ✅ My experience as an educator and program director have given me a huge toolbox of transferrable skills, and I've got relevant stories to illustrate all of them. What makes you authentic, even at the risk of ridicule? What are you? What are you not? #recruiters #opentowork #authenticity #changemanagement #learninganddevelopment
