Agriculture study on cover crops mixtures delivers unexpected results Farmers usually plant cover crops after harvesting their main crop. This prevents erosion of the soil and nutrient leaching. The roots of these crops also stabilize the structure of the soil. It had been assumed that a mixture of different cover crops would result in particularly intensive rooting. However, a recent study carried out by the Universities of Bonn, Kassel and Göttingen found only limited evidence that this is the case. Instead, mixed cover crops grow thinner roots than when just one single type of cover crop is planted. This result was unexpected. It documents how little is understood about the interactions between plant roots. https://lnkd.in/gu82ptdw #agriculture #rasodayaenterprises

Project Leadership, Management & Delivery I Founder of Grow Projects | MSc (Dist) Project Management | Prince 2 & Agile Practitioner | Commercial Horticulture
"An ability to care for plants, over technology, is what really matters." An interesting article about the growing pains of the vertical farming sector, but what stood out for me was the pitfall of assuming technology can replace human growing skills. This was a key finding of the in-depth skills research and curriculum development project I recently delivered with Matthew Craig for Brinsbury College. 21 commercial horticulture businesses, representing around half the sector in West Sussex, told us their first priority, well before training in high-tec applications, was for new-entrants to have a strong foundation in horticultural principles. Basic growing skills, including irrigation, plant health and nutrition, remain the most important and much needed technical skills for the sector. #skillsforthefuture #strategicprojectmanagement #commercialhorticulture

Read now our latest whitepaper on how to save energy with the latest horticulture LED lighting and sensor solutions. Low energy consumption is crucial to the success of controlled environment agriculture. Rapidly increasing energy costs mean that it is important to keep power consumption in greenhouses and vertical farms as low as possible if growers are to not only produce high yields, but also earn a reasonable profit on their crops. Horticulture lighting is responsible for much of the energy consumed when growing plants professionally: this makes it important to use highly efficient horticulture luminaires.
