This week, our Black Employee Network (BEN) hosted a luncheon to celebrate Juneteenth with SSB associates at the Doraville HQ, featuring Chef Edward Koraynie, owner of Ooey Gooey Catering. “Juneteenth is such a significant holiday in the U.S. as it commemorates the end of slavery, and it’s important that its recognized and celebrated. BEN was honored to host a celebration sharing the history about Juneteenth with fellow associates, and using it as a moment in time to connect and learn.”—Hussene Youssouf, co-chair, Black Employee Network. Check out a few photos from the event! #Juneteenth #BlackEmployeeNetwork #LifeatSSB

Today marks the beginning of Black History Month; an exciting and essential time to learn about and celebrate the Black community’s contributions and vitality around the country and across all sectors. In addition to celebrating, it is also our duty to reflect on inequities and challenges uniquely faced by the Black community and commit to making change. While there’s been progress, there is still so much work to be done, particularly with housing support. Peel Region is facing an affordable housing crisis with too many residents living unaffordably or experiencing homelessness. There are 91,000 Peel households in core housing need and Black households are the most likely to be in core housing need compared to all other households. This is unacceptable. We need to do better. Peel’s Housing Services team is committed to closing this gap and ensuring that our programs and services are delivered equitably. We will continue to partner with Black-led organizations and advocates to learn more about our shared responsibilities and what actions we can take to help Black residents get and keep housing. #BlackHistoryMonth

This Black History Month we're honoring the incredible contributions of Black scientists and physicians to the health care field. Like Dr. Patricia Bath, founding member of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, or Dr. Charles Drew, who first identified that blood plasma could be transfused and donated. These incredible discoveries were made in the context of the astronomical health inequities and social and economic barriers Black families have historically faced and in many ways still face today. These health inequities contribute to Black Americans having higher maternal and infant mortality rates and lower life expectancy overall. Black communities also experience racism and discrimination while seeking health care, and that health care is often made inaccessible by other barriers like cost and transportation. We can and must do more to address these historic and ongoing health inequities. Plan A Health created our mobile health clinic serve communities in the Mississippi Delta experiencing these barriers and support wider health care access. Our mobile clinics offer services in community spaces such as community centers, churches, barbershops, and stores. We provide free healthcare services at all locations, no insurance required. We just launched a monthly dental clinic at our brick and mortar location in Louise, MS. And we're just getting started. https://planahealth.org/

Our commitment to this belief is deeply rooted in our Community Guidelines – which outlines our policies and values and prioritizes fostering digital spaces founded on these principles.
