When I was an undergraduate at IIT Madras, more than 90% students had one or more of the following 3 items as their dream career: (1) Getting a job at Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Uber or Netflix. (2) Getting a job at the top tier consulting firms like Mckinsey, BCG or Bain. (3) Getting into top grad schools like MIT, Stanford or Harvard. For me, I would have done anything for (1) or (3) in this list. 6 years later, I am a co-founder of 2 EdTech companies trying to create a massive impact in the Indian education system. I wish many students change their mindset from “getting” to “building”. (1) Instead of dreaming of “getting” into Google, why don’t you “build” your own company? (2) Instead of dreaming of “getting” into Mckinsey, why don’t you “build” your own AI consultancy firm for industries? (3) Instead of dreaming of “getting” into MIT, why don’t you “build” your own university with your own curriculum? The main difference between 20 years earlier and now is that: (1) India has massively transformed to a rising startup hub. It’s the best time to be building a startup in India now. (2) The American dream is slowly fading now. It is not as lucrative as it was 20 years back. (3) Now is the time to build Indian products, create jobs and outsource to the world; rather than being part of an international company and creating value for them in a small sector of their company. If you are a student who does not achieve his/her dreams of getting into the best college or getting the best job; it might be a blessing in disguise. Now, you can forget about everything and "build" something of your own. That's what me, Rajat Dandekar and Sreedath Panat are doing, and we don't regret it for a single day.

🚀 "Why get Ph.D: Navigating Academia as an Early Employee in the Startup of Knowledge" 🚀 Over the last two years, I had multiple opportunities to interact with startup founders who talked about their visions and marketing strategies - and sometimes shared over beers the in-depth aspects of founder life. For the last months, I had a chance to learn that many aspects of being the startup founder are very similar to that of a faculty in academia. Among the commonalities: 1️⃣ Startup Founders and Faculty Members are: Visionaries: They craft the vision and mission, charting the course for their respective endeavors. Multitaskers: Wear multiple hats from strategy, marketing, fundraising, personnel training to execution, often juggling countless responsibilities. Risk Takers: They take calculated risks, navigate uncertainty, and adapt to changing landscapes. There are of course differences - for example one of primary responsibilities of faculty is teaching. Similarly, the service aspect of faculty job is essentially large corporate role. But building the research group is a startup. 2️⃣ But this is turn means that we can think about being a PhD student akin to being an early employee in a startup. Your role is to pursue groundbreaking research, innovate, and contribute to the academic community. You gain opportunities for learning, skill development, and a platform to shape the future. Again, this analogy can go only so far- the successful startup will scale, with the associated career growth and remunerative opportunities. But then, not all startups scale. As a Ph.D. student, you will graduate and move to industry - where the career growth will happen. 🌟 However, the key argument stays. The spirit within a thriving academic group mirrors that of a startup. In both settings, innovation, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence drive progress. Just as startups challenge traditional markets, academic research groups push the boundaries of knowledge. Collaboration knows no bounds, transcending disciplines, and the relentless pursuit of answers unites these worlds. Resilience in the face of challenges is key.
