Recently had an insightful discussion at the Digital Diagnostics policy dialogue during the Next Generation of Care: Merging Healthcare and Technology Conference 2024 by IMU, which was attended by Prof Abdul Aziz (IMU VC, CEO), Tan Sri Abu Bakar, and many others esteemed researchers, professors, MOH policy makers, MMA, APHM and others. While the focus was on adoption of digital pathology, my interest lies in leveraging digital diagnostics for early detection of non-communicable diseases like Chronic Kidney Disease, CKD. In NKF, we've screened 600k+ individuals for NCD risk factors since 2008. Yet, there's a gap in early intervention, especially for high-risk groups. More often than not, these high risk groups carried on their life’s without further lifestyle or treatment interventions. What are the digital health and diagnostics tools that could assist with this? Now, we could only diagnose CKD by screening the Serum Creatinine and Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio using venous blood of which the results will only be available couple of days later. Promising point of care diagnostics solutions starting to enter the market but until it’s cost effective, we will have challenges pushing for widespread adoption. We need cost-effective point-of-care solutions for instant screening, on-the-spot diagnosis and personalized treatment. The seamless integration with primary care and remote monitoring tools would then empower patients towards better self care, home disease management and eventually better patient outcomes. And for me, the most important aspect lies with raising health awareness and improving digital accessibility and literacy to drive greater adoption.
