Growing up in Poland and spending most of my adult life in America have taught me a valuable lesson: our surroundings shape who we are, often on an unconscious level. The language we speak is just one example of this powerful influence. We speak the language we do because we were surrounded by people who speak that language. But this rule extends far beyond language. Our environment unconsciously molds our beliefs, values, habits, and skills – it creates our brain's software, without us even realizing it. The language example shows the challenge of altering deeply rooted aspects of ourselves. Just as it would be very difficult for us to suddenly start speaking another language fluently, it is equally challenging for us to suddenly transform our beliefs, values, or habits, which have been shaped and reinforced by our environment over time. In my personal life journey, living in both Poland and the USA, and experiencing two different education, healthcare, political, housing, transportation, and cultural systems, has helped me to understand how placing yourself in a different environment can open up incredible opportunities to see things in different ways. When we surround ourselves with people from diverse backgrounds, with unique perspectives, experiences, and expertise, we expand our own knowledge and capabilities. Meeting people coming from different environments brings together a wealth of ideas and approaches, leading to innovation and better problem-solving. Whether you're looking to learn a new language, develop a new skill, or you just want to see things from a different perspective, it's good to remember the unconscious power of your environment. When you put yourself in diverse settings, engage with people from different places, and embrace the growth that comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, you'll not only enhance your own personal and professional journey but also contribute to building a more inclusive world for everyone. #Inclusion #Diversity #Innovation #MicrosoftCulture
