Broadly, the machinery spectrum can be divided into two: 🔧Incremental Enhancements: This represents the meticulous fine-tuning of established machinery, embodying a legacy of expertise. By making subtle, continuous adjustments, we achieve better outputs while marginally decreasing environmental strain. It's the testament of our commitment to constant improvement. 🚀Radical Disruptors: On the opposite end are the trailblazing innovations. These aim to completely redefine the production landscape. Their collective research goals were centered on developing eco-friendly textiles, and their success comes in the form of a unique plasma coating process that uniformly applies a water-repellent finish to textile fibers. This innovative process renders seamless distribution of hydrophobic substances throughout entwined fibers, effectively preventing any water penetration. This week we hosted our virtual conference Innovate: Marine-Derived Textiles. Ocean harvesting/the use of marine-derived resources is a topic we are increasingly getting asked about at WTiN. As such, we wanted to bring our members (and beyond) a deep-dive into this emerging and exciting corner of the industry - it's so full of potential. We looked at innovations in dyeing and pigments, fibres and yarn development, ocean plastics as a feedstock, regulations, end-of-life considerations, paths to commercialisation, establishing brand partnerships and so much more. Here are some key takeaways from the conference: 📈Scalability is key with this emerging technology: scaling in a sustainable way that doesn't interrupt existing infrastructure so risk is limited 🌳 End-of-life considerations need to be taken into account at the beginning of development processes but they must be taken into consideration across the whole of the supply chain. What good is it for your fibre to degrade if your dye doesn't? etc. This discussion needs to happen between partners 🏛 Market and regulatory drivers are pushing brands towards more bio-based (and marine-based) solutions. These solutions are also bound by regulations but this should not stifle creativity in this emerging space 🤝Brand partnerships. Brands hold the power when it comes to the success of an innovation and driving adoption. How can one not like the phasing of this research project? 👇 Today almost all carpets, rugs and mats are dumped or incinerated after life due to the use of different materials that are inseparable at the end of life. SCHMITS chemical solutions has developed new back coatings that make carpets, rugs and mats recyclable. In this way, Schmits hopes to contribute to a solution for the current environmental and raw materials problem. To this end, Schmits has been touch with key players from the entire supply chain. Since the beginning of September, Schmits is collaborating with students Innovative Textile Development (ITD) of Hogeschool Saxion. After thorough research, these fresh pair of eyes will come forward with strategies that can be employed to enhance circularity and market viability of carpet products through the application of a recyclable back coating for synthetic mono carpets. Making our way of life more sustainable requires alternatives to outdated technologies that are as well-established as they are harmful.
