Why Patient Advocacy is Crucial During the July Transition Patient advocacy is especially crucial during the July transition, often referred to as the "July Effect," when new medical residents begin their hospital rotations. Here are three to four reasons why patient advocacy plays a vital role during this period: Navigating Inexperienced Staff: The influx of new residents who are just beginning their hospital rotations can lead to errors and inconsistencies in patient care. Patient advocates play a critical role in bridging the experience gap, ensuring that all procedures and treatments are correctly followed and that any potential errors are caught and corrected early. Ensuring Continuity of Care: With the shift changes that come with new medical teams, there's a risk of information loss during handovers. A patient advocate ensures continuity by maintaining comprehensive records of treatment plans, medical history, and ongoing care details. This continuous oversight helps prevent any lapses in care that might occur due to miscommunication or oversight by new staff. Empowering Patients Through Education: July can be a confusing time for patients navigating complex healthcare environments. Patient advocates educate and empower patients by explaining the implications of the July Effect, preparing them for possible delays or issues, and advising them on how to effectively communicate their needs and concerns to new healthcare providers. Advocating for Patient Rights and Best Care: Patient advocates are crucial in safeguarding patient rights during this transitional period. They ensure that patients receive the best possible care by advocating for their needs, questioning and confirming medical decisions, and seeking second opinions when necessary. Advocates ensure that patient care adheres to the highest standards, even when hospitals are adapting to new internal dynamics. These reasons highlight the enhanced need for vigilant, informed patient advocacy during July to mitigate the risks associated with the influx of new medical residents, ensuring patient safety and quality of care. #JulyEffect #PatientAdvocacy #HealthcareSafety

If I don’t know what I don’t know, asking me if I have any questions is really just going through the motions. This is one fact that many healthcare providers fail to realize. We give our instructions with the best intentions to our patients; they smile and nod their heads to affirm they heard us. When we ask, "Do you understand?" they will affirm that they understood. As soon as that authority figure walks away, if you ask them if they understand, they might say, "No, please explain to me what they said," or they will just say, "It doesn’t matter, I trust y’all." The truth is that many patients don’t want to bother people. They feel like asking for a breakdown at their level is too much trouble, so they yield to just trusting that what they’re about to do and what we say is in their best interest. Being a nurse for over 35 years, I know that sometimes what is about to happen may not be in their best interest. To know the times that I’ve come back and broken it down to a level they understand and they gasp and say, "I don’t want that! I don’t want to do that! Can you ask them to come back? I’ve changed my mind!" That drives me on a daily basis when I work. I want to make sure that patients get what they want, what’s best for them according to what they present, and what’s best for their future. Healthcare providers in any role can advocate for our patients by simply making sure they understand. Yes, it might take a little more of your time, but I always encourage people to expand or evolve their reason for why they show up to care for their patients. 3️⃣Three Tips to Improve Patient Advocacy:** 🎯Use Simple Language:** Avoid medical jargon. Break down complex information into simple, understandable terms. 🎯Verify Understanding:** Ask patients to explain back what they’ve understood. This helps ensure they truly grasp the information. 🎯Create a Safe Environment:** Encourage questions and reassure patients that it’s okay to ask for clarification without feeling embarrassed. One of my mantras I remember as I work with my patients is: Treat your patient as YOU would want to be treated or would want your family member to be treated. #PatientAdvocacy #mypatientsmatter #HealthcareCommunication #Nursesonlinkedin #nurseadvocate
