Blackleg, also known as black quarter, is a severe infectious disease affecting mainly pastured cattle and occasionally sheep worldwide. Blackleg is caused by the bacterium Clostridium chauvoei and it leads to myonecrosis with high mortality rates, particularly in young animals. Clinical signs include: - High fever - Depression (refusal to eat, lethargy) - Subcutaneous gas edema - Rapid death The pathogenesis involves ingestion of spores from the soil, which remain latent in muscles until activated by trauma or ischemia, causing necrosis and toxin release. Diagnosis is challenging. In the live animal a preliminary diagnosis of blackleg can be made based on clinical signs and the presence of typical muscle emphysema. Treatment options are limited: Prevention through vaccination may be the primary strategy. Treatment with antimicrobials (drug of choice being procaine penicillin) around affected tissues, aggressive surgical debridement to allow aeration along with supportive treatment can be of value too. One of the biggest challenges affecting human and animal health care is the difficulty in controlling and treating infectious diseases. Before the advent of Modern Medicine, a lot of death resulted from minor cuts that resulted in bloodstream infections. However the discovery of antibiotics several years ago brought about a major breakthrough to the global healthcare delivery system as it improved the health and well-being of humans and animals. However, in recent times, most microbes have evolved several mechanisms to resist antibiotics and other antimicrobials thus rendering them less effective for the treatment of infections and diseases. The concept of resistance of microbes to antimicrobials to which they were previously sensitive is referred to as Antimicrobial Resistance. The main cause of Antimicrobial Resistance is misuse and overuse of antimicrobials. In preventing antimicrobial resistance we all have a collective role to play– you and I must be involved. Responsible use of antibiotics and other antimicrobials is strongly recommended for the prevention of Antimicrobial Resistance. Do not take any drug you have not been prescribed to take. When you are prescribed any medication, do well to keep to the duration of the prescription. Further, prevent infections, this is possible through good personal and environmental hygiene. Ensure you wash your hands before and after using toilet facilities, eating e. t. c. Also, participate in educating others about Antimicrobial Resistance.Together we can end Antimicrobial Resistance. #AMRControl #WAAW #BOHN

#Brucellosis is a #zoonotic #infectiousdisease . Dogs are highly susceptible to #Brucella, and the infection rate can reach 26.6%. #Brucellacanis is mainly spread through body fluids such as urine, semen, and breast milk. Infection of adult #dogs will cause damage to the reproductive, immune, nervous and other systems. #Ringbio’s Brucellosis Antibody Rapid Test Kit is based on indirect #immunochromatographic assay, to detect brucellosis antibody in #dogs or #cats #serum, #plasma samples. The test time is 15 minutes, and the product's #specificity and #sensitivity are both higher than 90%. It is rapid, accurate and easy-to-operate. Available to #petowners and #petclinics.
