🌱 Exciting news out of Michigan! The state is making significant strides in environmental justice by applying for federal funding aimed at tackling health and environmental disparities in underrepresented communities. Here's a closer look at what this means and why it's essential. Michigan is competing for valuable grants from the EPA's Environmental Justice Small Grants program and the Brownfields Program. These initiatives are crucial as they specifically target communities in Detroit, Flint, Muskegon, Grand Rapids, and Saginaw—areas that have long faced the brunt of pollution and health issues. 🔍 The Environmental Justice Small Grants seek to empower communities with up to $200,000 for local projects. These projects focus on addressing dire public health and environmental challenges that disproportionately impact low-income and minority groups. 🏗️ Likewise, the Brownfields Program is about transformation—revitalizing contaminated lands into productive properties, with Michigan aiming for up to $600,000 in grants. Both programs aim not just at cleanup but also at fostering education, outreach, and community planning to ensure sustainable futures. 🤔 Have you witnessed similar initiatives in your area? How effective do you think these programs are in addressing environmental justice? 💬 Let's discuss how strategic funding and community involvement can turn the tides toward healthier and more equitable environments. #EnvironmentalJustice #CommunityDevelopment #Sustainability #EPA #Michigan 📢 Share your thoughts and experiences! Let’s learn from each other on how best to advocate for and implement these crucial environmental justice initiatives. https://lnkd.in/gMgTPVc8

🌱 Exciting News in Environmental Justice! 🌍 California is taking bold steps towards equitable development with the Equitable Community Revitalization Grant (ECRG) program. The Othering and Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley and California Environmental Justice Alliance community advocates are partnering with the California Department of Toxic Substances Control to make this happen. 🏡 The ECRG program allocates over $250 million to clean up brownfields and revitalize disadvantaged communities across the state. Brownfields are sites contaminated with toxins, disproportionately affecting low-income communities of color. 🤝 Together, they're redefining the program to prioritize equitable development and environmental justice: ✅ Cleanup of sensitive sites to the highest standards. ✅ No projects increasing pollution in the area. ✅ Commitment to community benefits like local ownership, green spaces, and more. ✅ Accountable community engagement. 🌟 This collaboration sets a precedent for government-community partnerships in equitable development. It's a promising step toward a future where growth doesn't displace vulnerable communities. Read more about this inspiring initiative in the blog post by Andre Soucy and Ramon Quintero from UC Berkeley's Othering & Belonging Institute. When seeking funding, individuals and organizations within underinvested rural communities and Native nations often need to adopt and adhere to specific language, processes, practices, and measures of success to conform to funder expectations and systems. But what if these systems were flipped? What if these funders—who are, after all, supportive of projects tailored to community needs—learned to understand the language, processes, practices, and priorities of people in those communities? A new report by the Aspen Institute Community Strategies Group focuses on precisely that. The report highlights how two very different organizations—the Imperial Valley Wellness Foundation and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Agency National Environmental Justice Advisory Council—are learning to work in true partnership with the communities they serve. My father's 1st book, Blueprint for Going Green, will be released in a few months, but is available for preorder now. Please consider it for your environment library. Plus it's a good read! "In 1977, one forward-thinking judge took an ecological disaster—the poisoning of the James River by Allied Chemical—and turned it into a great environmental-protection legacy. The $8 million payment made by Allied would go on to fund the game-changing Virginia Environmental Endowment. Blueprint for Going Green provides an insider’s account of the remarkable results of this landmark ruling and the foundation it spawned. Over the following decades, the VEE helped to grow the fledgling environmental movement in Virginia into a powerful force for protecting the state’s water quality and conserving its landscape. This inspiring story reveals how a small group can make a profound difference by engaging in public policy work, funding science to advance public policy, and helping to build a lasting and effective citizen-led environmental movement."
