Reflecting on this last day of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we're so proud of the unity and strength our AANHPI community has shared over the past few weeks. Our last post, from Lenna Martinek, Store Manager for Aéropostale, is a heartful perspective on the sense of family and belonging that transcends DNA. Here's to continuing to celebrate unity and the diversity that makes the AANHPI community so special all year! "It's amazing how the AANHPI community feels like an extended family. Growing up, I sometimes wondered why I didn't look like my parents, being adopted from South Korea, but it's not about DNA. It's how we're raised and the people we surround us that shape us. I am proud to embrace my Asian American culture and love to learn and teach others about it as well." #SPARCsFly #SPARCinclusivity #AANHPI #AANHPImonth

We recognize Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the invaluable contributions that generations of Americans from Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander backgrounds made to our nation's history, society and culture. Bayer’s Business Resource Group BASIA (Bayer Asian Society Inclusion Alliance) theme for this year’s #AANHPI celebration is embracing resilience. The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the process and outcome of successfully adapting to challenging life experiences, primarily through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands. The American story, a testament to resilience and strength, is intricately woven with the voices and legacies of AANHPI individuals. Their contributions have been instrumental in building and uniting our country. By embracing their resilience, we can draw inspiration to overcome life's challenges and emerge stronger. #TeamBayer

Why We Celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month in May This May, we take a moment to recognize the incredible contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) to the fabric of the United States. Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month is annually observed in May, serving as a time to honor the rich culture, history, and contributions of these diverse communities to American history. Each part of this community possesses unique experiences, reminding us that no single story can fully encapsulate the rich legacies of AANHPI individuals. Throughout American history, these communities have often faced harm in the pursuit of advancing the U.S. agenda, despite their pivotal contributions to socio-political movements. For 2024, the Federal Asian Pacific American Council has themed AANHPI month “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation,” paying homage to resilient innovators and pioneers who have not only shaped the communities’ history but also the nation's history in the face of adversity. The legacies of AANHPI leaders are rich with lasting contributions across economic, political, social, technological, and cultural spheres, characterized by their creativity even while navigating systemic barriers (source: fapac.org). Their continued influence on our nation's future cannot be understated. The members of Chi Upsilon Sigma encourage you to educate yourself on the overlooked and untold stories of AANHPI authors, nonprofits/organizations, laborers, political figures, and these communities as a whole. #AANHPIHeritageMonth

As we close out AANHPI Heritage month we asked our high school and college students to reflect on what it means to them as they continue to explore their identity, Hieu, Cohort 14, who is a rising Junior at Wake Forest shared this reflection with us: "AANHPI heritage month is an opportunity for me to reflect on my experience navigating life as a first generation Asian American. Being Asian means something different for everyone and there is a wide range of experience based on your ethnicity and family background. This month is a chance to celebrate the wins we have made in the Asian community but also reflect on the challenges that face Asian Americans today. Often times the challenges Asian American face are overlooked and undermined but became more prevalent with the overt racism that existed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we face problems such as the bamboo ceiling, the model minority myth, and a vague generalization of all ethnicities under the umbrella. Being back home, I am celebrating AANHPI month by enjoying a lot of great Vietnamese cuisine and spending a great amount of time reflecting on my lived experience. Due to my interest in Finance, I am actively pursuing active involvement in Asian American Finance affinity groups in a search for mentors with similar backgrounds who have successfully navigated the competitive career landscape. #AANHPIHeritageMonth #AsianAmerican #FirstGeneration
