While navigating through the channels of bureaucracy, recently met the batch'14 IAS officer from Maharashtra named Shri #NikhilTFunde who is currently serving as District Magistrate of one of the Aspirational districts of #uttarpradesh. We shared good laugh, some criticalities of policy execution and some hope for a better future which is rooted in the idea of inclusivity and sustainability. I was amazed with the sensitivity that he carries for people at 'Bottom of pyramid'. Its such a wonderful nostalgia, when you find yourself in the position to relate to the philosophical rumination/ideas and theories on actual ground. I remember we had a module titled "Public Policy in India: History, Institutions and Practice" back at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay where we deep dived to understand the objective of "State" its distributive power, and its abstractness. We dissected it to get a sense of structural and functional role. I quote one of the lines which defines State quite coherently : States are not simply functional and bureaucratic apprtuses but powerful sites symbolic Nd cultural production that are themselves always understood in particular way (Jessop, 1999). Thanks Prof. Shishir K Jha Sir for curating such an amazing module and for inspiring us to think critically. That module was too contagious, It actually inspired me to get my hands dirty in last mile policy delivery landscape, to understand bottom up execution and bottle necks. Ah! 🎉Hi everyone!🎉 Just like any other fruit that leaves it's old tree to start a new journey of its own and continue the eternal process, the closure of my graduation opened new doors with newer opportunities and challenges for me. The last two months, consequently, have been nothing short of a wonderful adventure. With elation, I wish to share with everyone here that I got placed into Union Mutual Fund at the position of Relationship Manager. I thank my college Anil Surendra Modi School Of Commerce (ASMSOC) and Jyoti Talwar for smoothening this process of placement and extending support at all times. At the germinating stages, one always looks for a guide to show the right direction and teach the right actions. Saurabh Jain sir, Anurag Sharma sir, Anil Chandran sir, Megha Matkar ma'am and Amit Kumar Tiwari sir appeared as sign boards, never let me go astray and prepared me to hit the ground running. Lastly, the ones who I can comfortably call family now, are my team members here in Kolkata. I recently attended a meetup hosted by Public Policy India's Ahmedabad chapter, which discussed public policy affairs in India. The meetup was attended by people from various interdisciplinary backgrounds, such as economics, law, and urban planning, who shared their insights on how policies can be made more effective in India.  Being a designer, it was interesting to see how an interdisciplinary approach is gradually being appreciated, and that made me realize that design will eventually play a crucial role in facilitating this approach in India. At strategic levels like policy space, design needs to be an integral part of such planning. Systems thinking, service design, and future thinking are effective tools along with design thinking that can help create more human-centric policies. Design can enhance the quality of policies and enable a better understanding of systems thinking.
