Clearly, Mexico’s educational system has a lot of problems. 🇲🇽🎓 The education system in Mexico faces numerous challenges. 🔻 Only 62% of students complete secondary education. 🔻 Significant disparities still exist between gender in accessing education. 🔻 Economic pressures contribute to high dropout rates. 🔻 Teachers often lack adequate support and training. 🔻 Less than 30% have quality educational resources and many lack basic tools and infrastructure. Despite these challenges, progress has been slow. The root cause lies in systemic issues such as poverty, inadequate funding, and a lack of attention to education as a priority. Without addressing these underlying issues, meaningful change will remain elusive. At UNETE Mexican Foundation, we take this very seriously. Friends and followers, please take a moment to consider the Tores Foundation and their valuable work in underprivileged areas of Cape Town. www.toresfoundation.org.uk "In a nutshell we run after-school debating clubs in schools in and around the Cape Flats. The charity uses debate as a pathway to develop students’ critical thinking and confidence, in order to cultivate active citizens who are encouraged to participate politically and transform their communities; Our focus is on historically disadvantaged pupils who have not had the same access to educational opportunities because of their history and background. It is these same students whose education was impacted the most during the Covid pandemic as they did not have the recourse to laptops and data to continue their education remotely. We have developed a very effective methodology. We teach students how to debate proficiently but what sets us apart is that the subject matter of the debates is challenging with an emphasis on current affairs, politics and world issues which requires analysis, thought and research. At our core is our goal to build more confident and politically aware young people who appreciate the importance of democracy, the necessity for preserving it and the need for them to initiate societal change in their own communities. Teachers have also reported that the addition of our debating courses to a school’s curriculum significantly improves the academic achievement of students across a range of subjects. Stellenbosch Business School have adopted us as their Social Impact Partner and have been incredibly supportive of our programme. All our facilitators are trained by academics on their campus, and they are also helping us roll out our online programme which will enable us to expand our reach to schools beyond the environs of the Cape Flats. But like all charities, we are dependent on funding and the generosity of our supporters.  Covid-19 took a huge toll on our funding and we have yet to bring that back to where it was. We are therefore looking for either long or short term donors who are able to fill the present year funding gap, secure our programme and help us continue to deliver and expand our after school programme. We are able to deliver the full effect of our programme to 600 students a week across 34 schools for a total cost of £162,000 pa, with the aim of more than doubling this to reach over 1,200 students per week next year, 2024, for a cost of £326,000.  Most importantly, an exceptional 92% of donations to Tore’s Foundation is spent on programme delivery because we keep the cost of operating the charity to as close to zero as possible."

Today, the world celebrates International Literacy Day! Since UNESCO established the holiday in 1967, people have been using today to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society. These efforts have become even more critical over the past few years as crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and conflicts continue to fuel literacy challenges and declining literacy rates among young people and adults. Did you know that in 2020, the number of children lacking basic literacy skills rose by 20% (483 million to 584 million), or that the share of children from low and middle-income countries who could not read and understand a simple text with comprehension rose from 57% in 2019 to an estimated 70% in 2022? I believe that children deserve better, and we can do more as a society to change these statistics. Therefore, I encourage you to use today to promote child literacy by taking the following actions: ~Donating books to local classrooms. ~Gifting a book to children in your life. ~Volunteering to tutor children in your community. ~Starting a community lending library. ~Donating to organizations that support child literacy, like Save The Children (https://lnkd.in/gQ_fchY4). ~Sharing and supporting resources like the Reading Rainbow (https://lnkd.in/gUGM5ZSX). READ Educational Trust and its associated entities is the first literacy organization in South Africa. Founded in 1979, READ led literacy advocacy efforts and interventions to address low literacy levels in South Africa, targeting learners and teachers from under-resourced schools. READ’s contribution, footprint, and legacy in the literacy and education sectors is indisputable. READ’s work is rooted on the belief that literacy and access to quality education are fundamental in empowering individuals to become socially and economically engaged citizens, reducing socioeconomic disparities, growing the country’s talent and workforce pool, and achieving continuing positive social change in South Africa. Our methodology and approach to language literacy is balanced, agile, and strategic enabling READ to continuously evolve and appropriately respond to the changing global environment and the technological advances of the 21st Century. READ’s focus on English as a First Additional Language is purposeful and designed to assist learners to become confident and adept in English, a language required to succeed academically and professionally. Our core focus areas are: ·      Early Childhood Development Education ·      Foundational Phase and Intermediate Phase Literacy interventions ·      Teacher Development ·      High School Bridging Programs ·      Resource Materials ·      Developing and Publishing learning resources Over the years, READ’s programs and interventions have impacted on 7 525 258 learners and 234 620 teachers in 39 797 schools across South Africa.

Celebrating International Literacy Day: A Commitment to Empowering Communities Through Literacy Today, September 8th, marks International Literacy Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of literacy and the need for universal access to education. At the Maryam Library Foundation, we believe that literacy is a fundamental human right. It is essential for individuals to be able to participate fully in society, to achieve their full potential, and to live fulfilling lives. Literacy is more than just the ability to read and write. It is also the ability to think critically, to communicate effectively, and to learn throughout one's life. Literacy empowers individuals to make informed decisions, to advocate for themselves and their communities, and to contribute to a more just and equitable world. Despite the importance of literacy, millions of people around the world are still denied access to basic education. According to UNESCO, there are still 773 million adults who cannot read or write, and 258 million children who are out of school. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the global literacy crisis. School closures have disrupted the education of millions of children, and many learners have fallen behind. The pandemic has also highlighted the importance of digital literacy, as more and more people rely on technology to access information and services. On this International Literacy Day, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering communities through literacy. We believe that everyone has the right to learn, and we are dedicated to working towards a world where everyone has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We are working to promote literacy in underserved communities by: * Providing access to books and other learning materials * Supporting the development of libraries and other literacy programs * Training teachers and other literacy providers * Advocating for policies that support literacy We believe that literacy is a powerful tool for change.
