Attention business leaders: Imagine going to work after not eating for a few days and trying to host a leadership summit. Your mind is foggy, your energy is depleted, and your focus is shattered, making it nearly impossible to inspire and lead effectively, let alone inspire a crowd.
Now, this about your employee and how THEY ARE dealing with these factors. Social determinants like food security, education, housing, and healthcare shape not only individual lives but the core of our organizations.
Think about it:
If our people are hungry, our businesses stay in famine. Nutritional insecurity impacts productivity, creativity, and overall workplace morale. No one can bring their best self to work when their basic needs are unmet.
If our people are left with poor education status, our businesses are not critically thinking. Education fuels innovation, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Without it, we limit our potential for growth and transformation.
If our people lack stable housing, our businesses lack stability. Housing insecurity disrupts employees' lives, leading to stress, absenteeism, and decreased productivity. A stable home environment is fundamental to a stable work environment.
If our people are left without access to healthcare, our businesses struggle to stay healthy. Poor access to healthcare means more sick days, lower productivity, and a workforce that cannot perform at its best. Preventative care and access to medical services are essential for maintaining a healthy, vibrant team.
If your HR or employee experience teams aren't discussing food insecurity, it's time to start the conversation. Reach out to begin this crucial dialogue. Prioritizing these investments is a strategic imperative, enabling us to build thriving, resilient businesses that can face any challenge head-on.
Feel free to DM me if you would like to connect over social determinants of health and health equity. Comment below if you have thoughts. Happy to start the conversation in any way, shape or form that makes sense for you!
Thank you Greg Berger, MBA for this important work and even more important conversation.

Health systems in the United States are in a precarious position as they grapple with how to ensure an adequate and healthy workforce.
Healthforce Center at UCSF Director Sunita Mutha and colleagues undertook a study this year of trends and opportunities with the potential to promote health worker well-being strategies, and to strengthen systems that advance equity in health care.
“The greatest immediate need for improving health workers’ well-being is mental health supports to address increases in depression, anxiety, and stress. Acknowledging that important policy (such as payment reform) and cultural (such as reducing stigma) issues must be addressed, but which exceed the initial scope of this effort, the report (which you can read by tapping the link in our bio) identifies five priority recommendations to pursue.”
The report speaks to these five areas in detail:
🌿 Strengthen and expand worker resources to address mental health challenges, especially those that are culturally and linguistically concordant.
🌿 Address secondary trauma experienced by workers, such as burdens of increased workloads, risk of job loss, and the pressures of dependent care.
🌿 Support development of comprehensive organizational approaches to improve worker well-being among safety-net entities, where worker diversity might further health equity broadly.
🌿 Grow the knowledge base and tools for improving worker well-being to advance health equity broadly by investing in the large and often overlooked middle-skill workforce.
🌿 Reduce stigma for workers seeking mental health services and supports by normalizing outreach and ensuring confidentiality.
At Flourish 🌿 we are honored to provide timely, mental health services to multiple health organizations in California.

The percentage of adults working past the age of 75 is projected to nearly double by the year 2030. To meet the health care needs of this population, it’s vitally important for employers to proactively focus on healthy aging considerations such as increased doctor visits, treatment of common chronic conditions and access to mental health services. Delivering health benefit plans that are inclusive and reflect this employment trend is critical and necessary.
My colleague Jennifer Truscott shares with Employee Benefit News what employers can do to help meet the health care needs of older adults.

As Social Prescribing Day is approaching, we highlight and celebrate the impact of social prescribing. At General Practice Alliance, our dedicated Social Prescribing Link Workers are committed to empower people to prioritise their overall wellbeing and make choices that lead to happier and healthier lives. Through personalised support and guidance, our Link Workers offer a holistic approach with a range of community resources, activities and support networks.
We caught up with Pete, our Social Prescribing Link Worker, who leads a men's wellbeing group called 'Cheers for Tuesday' in collaboration with The McCarthy-Dixon Foundation. This group provides a safe environment for men to come together and exchange experiences. We discussed his perspectives on social prescribing and its impact on creating positive change.

🧠💡 Brain Teaser Time! 💡🧠
Imagine you're a community health services manager with a team of 5 health workers.
Each worker can visit 2 houses in an hour, but due to current circumstances, they can only work 4 hours a day.
Your community has 100 houses that need health services.
🤔 The question is:
How many days will it take for your team to visit all the houses in the community at least once?
And if one worker falls sick, how many additional days will it take?
🔎 Hint:
Start by calculating how many houses one worker can visit in one day.
Then, multiply this by the number of workers to find out how many houses the entire team can visit in a day.
Divide the total number of houses by this number to find out how many days it will take for the team to visit all the houses.
If one worker falls sick, recalculate the number of houses that can be visited in a day and determine the additional days needed.
Got your answer? 📝

Coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic and stemming from the recent U.S. Surgeon General’s advisories on mental health, social isolation, and the effects of social media, Americans are coming to grips with the real-world causes leading to social isolation. Congress can no longer afford to ignore this silent healthcare crisis.
During Global Loneliness Awareness Week, we are calling on Congress to act now -- before it's too late.
Learn about the causes, impact, solutions, and simple bipartisan steps Congress can take to support those suffering from social isolation and loneliness in the below guest opinion piece in The Messenger by Healthsperien LLC's own Andrew MacPherson.
In the piece, Andrew writes:
"The movement to address social isolation and loneliness has begun in public and private health care arenas, and policymakers have shown they can work together to address this problem. Lawmakers now have an opportunity to pass federal legislation that reflects the enormous support of stakeholders in the health care industry."
