Culture matters. I recently came across this article written by Christa Quarles, CEO of software company Alludo. Founded in 1985, the company recently transformed with a whole new brand identity and shift in their workplace model. As she shared her insight into the process, Quarles was quick to point out that culture is key to enabling a true transformation that goes beyond “we used to be known for X and now we are Y.” I couldn’t agree more. As Belden has shifted from being a maker of products to a network and data company which provides solutions based on our vast portfolio of products, we knew that a focus on culture was necessary to make our transformation possible. As teams rallied around our cultural mantra, Belong. Believe. Be You., they were met with the safe spaces for asking questions, sharing ideas, and as Quarles mentions, an acceptance that it’s OK to fail because trying new things and pushing the limits is what drives innovation. Had a blast at ELC yesterday leading a roundtable, catching great sessions, and reconnecting with engineering colleagues. What an energetic day! Some takeaways - ✨ In a culture of givers and takers, teams should strive to fill their team with givers. There are ways to "screen" for the two in interviews by seeing how people work together to solve problems. Do they help one another or push to get ahead? ✨ (No surprise) productivity is hard to define, and even harder to measure. There exists both top-down pressure to communicate to leadership, and bottom-up pressure to keep trust on their team. ✨ As startups scale, eng teams should celebrate what they delete too. Removing a feature can be just as important (or more) than adding a new one. ✨ Onboarding engineers in a remote era has many unique challenges. Success in onboarding means successful context on the systems, the domain, and the culture. Back for day two today 🎉 #SFELC
