Tech job seekers, what’s most important to you; The tech stack? Project? Culture? Money?
Fair warning; long post & a bit of an indictment on our industry! Hopefully you’ll follow / express your thoughts; Here we go!😊
Recruiters / TA teams constantly post jobs focused on; duties, qualifications, and requirements; There’s no alternative!
Job seekers need to know that we’re looking for a; Sr. Engineer, Data Architect, Analyst or a million other job titles / roles.
So, once we’ve established that the job is a "baseline fit” for your skills. What’s next?
Do you want to hear -
· About the organization?
· That they’re building a highly profitable / cutting-edge SaaS platform
· That the culture & work / life balance is amazing?
· Maybe they're building a product that doesn’t make much money but it helps underserved people in your community?
· Maybe we should just realize that the culture, mission, and product don't really matter TO YOU so long as the job pays really well!
To me~ IT’S ALL IMPORTANT, but, the level of importance / emphasis is different for every person!
As a recruiter it’s my job to get to know YOU & your motivators, yet many people don’t want to talk to a recruiter!
You want us to send over a job description / not waste your time with an “intake” call and honestly, I CAN NOT BLAME YOU ONE BIT!
You’ve been INUNDATED for years with recruiters who’s “pitch” is;
Hi - “I’m calling because I have XYZ job, using ABC tech stack” (which probably isn’t even what you do).
“It pays ________ and is fully remote, are you interested?”
(Theoretically you say yes); So.. The response is:
“GREAT! Send me a consent to submit email” (Without saying, so that I can quickly move on to the next candidate, knowing that you’re stuck with me, my crappy service, and my crappy company.)
How do I know the recruiter/ service is crappy? Because THIS APPROACH IS NOT RECRUITING!
Done right, recruiting should be focused on what’s important to you! Your skills, career goals, and personal interests.
The “job pitch” should ALWAYS be honest & accurate but focused on company culture (if interested in culture / work life balance), the money / equity (for people motivated by financial rewards), or on future tech initiatives (for people motivated by staying current / career progression)!
We may be discussing the same job but the message is different because we've explored what's important TO YOU! But, candidates have got to give us some time to get to that level of partnership / understanding!
I'm not saying "take every recruiter call" because MANY are a waste of time but if the approach “feels right”, spend 5 minutes, if it’s time well spent, spend 5 more, take a 2nd call, if it’s wrong, trust your gut & RUN!
Agency recruiters can either recruit the “right way" or recruit the "wrong way" BUT, given current market conditions; the good will thrive, the bad will die, and we'll leave AI to sort out the rest!
