Here's a more balanced view: While there are certainly a notable number of successful Indian-born CEOs leading major corporations globally, it's important to avoid generalizations and maintain perspective. Globally: It's estimated that less than 10% of Fortune 500 CEOs are of Indian origin. While this represents a significant number of individuals, it's far from a majority. Specific industries: In certain sectors like technology, Indian-born CEOs are more prevalent. For example, Sundar Pichai (Alphabet/Google), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), and Parag Agrawal (Twitter) are all prominent figures. Factors contributing to success: Education: India boasts a strong education system, particularly in STEM fields, producing highly qualified professionals. Many Indian CEOs have graduated from prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The stories of these CEOs share a common thread that perhaps begins with the Indian education system itself. Like myself, many of these leaders come from modest backgrounds. They attended government-run schools and colleges that, while lacking in resources, were rich in rigour and expectation. It is within these halls that the seeds of 'hunger' and 'hustle' — the drive to excel against all odds — are sown. It's this hustle, an almost inherent trait in the Indian professional diaspora, that has catapulted so many to international success. Whether it's the competitive pressure of population versus opportunity or the cultural emphasis on education and professional achievement, there's a resilience to the Indian hustle that resonates globally. These leaders navigated complex cultural transitions, learned to lead diverse teams, and adapted to global business landscapes while maintaining their distinct perspectives and values. This adaptability, forged in the diverse and often challenging Indian context, is what makes Indian leaders globally effective. Not only are Indian leaders emerging at the very top of blue chip companies, they are integral to the startup culture – by far the highest diaspora of founders. Enough and more has been said, with great pride,about CEO's of Indian origin running major global companies Less however has been said about expat CEO's leading Indian corporations. The few that have taken these roles have been less than successful - Infosys, Wipro, Tata Motors, Air India, Reliance digital, tata technologies, Sun Pharma etc. etc. etc. The intriguing question is why it works in one direction and not the other. Here's my take 1. MERITOCRACY vs. NETWORK EFFECT : In US companies, merit and performance often drive leadership choices. In India, personal comfort and networks play a significant role in these selections. 2. ADAPTABILITY & EDUCATION: The Indian education system equips individuals to handle ambiguity and adversity, making them adaptable in diverse environments. Western leaders, accustomed to structured systems, may struggle with India’s complexity. 3. REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT: India’s complex and often opaque regulatory landscape can be difficult for foreigners to navigate effectively. 4. BUSINESS DYNAMICS: In India, business operations are influenced by various external factors, including politics and social expectations, beyond pure business considerations. 5. CULTURAL NUANCES: India’s cultural diversity requires a nuanced approach to management, unlike the more homogeneous Western economies. 6. PROCESS ORIENTATION: Western economies emphasize process adherence, whereas in India, processes are more flexible guidelines. 7. MANAGEMENT STYLE: The hierarchical nature of Indian organizations can insulate CEOs from critical information, whereas Western companies tend to have flatter structures promoting transparency. 8. TOLERANCE FOR EXPERIMENTATION : Indian corporate culture has a low tolerance for failure, contrasting with the Western perspective of viewing failure as a learning opportunity. 9. WORK-LIFE BALANCE: The blurred lines between work and personal life in India can be challenging for expat CEOs used to clearer boundaries. 10.
