Last week, I was in #Benin, meeting with various stakeholders working to improve #roadsafety there. This trip marked my introduction to this topic area, and I learned a lot – I will never look at a road the same way again! One key takeaway that reinforced what #SBC practitioners already understand: no matter how much we educate or train people to adopt safer practices (like respecting speed limits), it's often insufficient without structural interventions (like speed bumps) or regulatory nudges (such as hefty fines for speeding) to back-up these efforts. Road safety programs re-emphasize the importance of comprehensive SBC programs that consider and utilize all available tools to enable #behaviorchange. #SBCatFHI360

Speeding was a contributing factor in almost 29 percent of all fatalities in 2021, an increase of 7.9 percent from 2020, and the correlation between speed and injury crashes is well documented. This is why achieving lower speeds is a key part of the FHWA’s Safe System Approach.
