Microaggressions are imperceptible, often inadvertent, biased remarks or behaviors that can be harmful to people, particularly those who belong to marginalized or underrepresented groups. Even while they might not seem like much, the way they add up can make the workplace uncomfortable, which lowers employee morale, mental health, and productivity. It is necessary to recognize and deal with microaggressions in order to foster an inclusive and respectful work environment. The culture and pace of the workplace play a vital role in the mental health of your employees. How? Well, let’s look at some recent data from the American Psychological Association. 📈 Mental health is a major concern for your employees: 92% say it’s important to work for an organization that values their emotional and psychological well-being. 📈 You may not be fostering a culture that truly supports #EmployeeWellbeing: 55% of workers say their employer overestimates how mentally healthy their environment is. 📈 Diverse workforces require equitable mental health support: Women, people with disabilities, and front-line workers are more likely to say they work in a toxic environment. 📈 A sense of belonging is important but not offered to many: 94% say it’s important to feel like they belong at work, but 20% say they don’t feel a sense of belonging. 📈 Even when they take time off, many employees feel like they can’t truly unplug: 40% say they don’t feel like their time off is respected. What does it all mean? Companies that create a caring culture and offer benefits to support their entire workforce are providing what employees want and need. This #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth is a good time to take stock of your environment and your benefits to ensure that you’re fostering a mentally healthy environment.

Excerpt: “For many Americans, work is demoralizing, frightening, and even traumatic. In APA’s 2024 Work in America survey, 15% of respondents labeled their workplace as somewhat or very toxic. Among those living with a cognitive, emotional, learning, or mental disability, 24% reported a "toxic workplace" experience. The survey also found nearly 3 in 5 respondents said their employer thinks their work environment is a lot mentally healthier than it actually is (59%), and nearly 2 in 5 said they worry that if they told their employer about a mental health condition, it would have a negative impact on them in the workplace (39%).” #workplacebullying #workplacetrauma #traumarecovery

Since the pandemic, the state of employees' mental health has remained in sharp focus. Things like stress, anxiety and burnout, caused by either a toxic work culture or personal struggles such as family conflict, physical health and lack of sleep, still rank as the most common contributors. There is, however, another taboo issue that impacts employees’ mental wellbeing and that is workplace violence. The article below deep-dives into this and the crucial need for safety at work.

Dealing with narcissists has become an everyday obstacle in the modern workplace. The individuals in question frequently display a grandiose sense of self-importance, an insatiable thirst for praise, and a deficiency of empathy. Their actions have the potential to create toxic work environments where there is a general emphasis on individual success over group success, manipulation, and undermining of coworkers. Everybody has seen, met, or worked alongside narcissists. And if you haven't, it's possible that you are one of them. Even though we can't always get away with such people, it's still critical that employers put their workers' wellbeing first by putting strategies in place for recognizing and handling narcissistic behavior. This could entail creating a culture of open communication and support, setting clear boundaries to prevent employee exploitation, and offering training on how to identify and deal with such personalities. In addition, narcissistic people can have a negative influence on the workplace; these effects can be lessened by providing resources for mental health support and encouraging a work-life balance, which will ultimately create a more positive and productive environment for everyone. #workplace #workplacebehaviour #organizationalbehaviour #workplacepsychology

It's important to recognize when a work environment is no longer a healthy place for you. A toxic work environment can come from a culture of working long hours, constant criticism, a negative attitude, gossiping, or any other behaviours that can make you feel stressed and unappreciated. 🤦♀️ Nobody should have to sacrifice their wellbeing for their job. There are many possible signs that your workplace is unhealthy. These include: a lack of growth opportunities, a heavy workload, lack of trust, lack of communication, too much micromanagement, disrespect, discrimination, hostility, bullying and harassment. Considering the power imbalance and structure in the workplace, it can be tricky to tackle an oppressive situation and create a healthier environment for everyone. Saying 'no' to unfair demands and actively pushing for more respectful behaviour is a step in the right direction. It's crucial to set boundaries in the office and not just accept the abuse for something we need to do to make ends meet - if we don't do it, someone else will. We should take assertive action to defend our rights if we're facing toxic behaviour in the workplace. We should avoid sinking to the same level of behaviour and instead stay focused on setting an example for change.👩💼 If after this, the situation does not change and you're still feeling overwhelmed and unappreciated in the workplace, it could be time to consider leaving to find an environment that supports and encourages you. This doesn't mean you can't work hard and reach ambitions, it just means that you should have the opportunity to be appreciated while you do that. 🤝 A job where you can make a difference and take pride in the work you do is worth the effort to find! No matter how much you think you need the job, don't stay somewhere where it's impacting your mental health. 🤗 Take time to find a good culture fit and make sure your efforts will be viewed positively. #toxicworkplace #culturematters #worklifebalance🤚
