#SustainablePublicGardens24 - On Thursday, June 27, 2024, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens' Downtown Sarasota campus became the World's First Net Positive Energy Botanical Garden Complex and home of the World' First Net Positive Restaurant (The Green Orchid by Michael's on East). We are thrilled for Selby Gardens and so proud of this achievement! The 50,000 square foot solar network made up of 2,158 panels sits atop the beautifully landscaped parking structure. The restaurant and plant shop also are beneath these solar panels and form the Morganroth Family Living Energy Access Facility (LEAF). This groundbreaking project will save Selby Gardens $100,000 annually in energy costs! The solar panels will also offset 975 tons of CO2 annually, which is the incredible equivalent of removing 211 cars off the road. Architect, John Byrd, began working on the project in 2017 and encountered many obstacles including the pandemic, supply chain issues, and inflation. I've had a lot of conversations recently about town planning - and comprehensive plans, in particular. If your town wants to be pollinator-friendly, that intention needs to be included in your comprehensive plan. Sure, it can help to address ordinances and policies as a start but, eventually, it leads back to your plan. If you are involved in planning for your town, consider what you need 20 years down the road, 50 years, 100 years. Pollinators and an ecosystem need to be at the top of that list - and it's not just a priority for agricultural communities. All of us need food. All of us need healthy ecosystems and wild areas. To get there, we need to stop separating our living and working areas from our wild areas. Native plants need to be part of all these spaces. They need to be maintained in accordance with pollinator lifecycles. Is your town thinking yet about pollinators? #savethebees #cityplanning #pollinators #climatechange #sustainability https://lnkd.in/e_cewW_e
