Once a taboo topic, more companies need to start getting comfortable talking with menopause women in their workplace. Menopause will impact EVERY woman worker in your business ages 40-58. This article outlines stats and findings from a UK perspective, but the numbers are more staggering in the US with approximately 40 million midlife women going through menopause. Apart from the obvious micro-aggressions at the water cooler, benefits plans and time off policies do not reflect a large portion of the employee workforce - and many of these women are in positions of leadership and mentorship for younger women in the business. Adobe, Bank of America and Bristol Myers Squibb are among a handful of major global employers now offering menopause-specific benefits, such as access to specialist private medical advice, paid leave and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) covered by health-insurance plans. 18 months ago, my colleague Kirin Kalsi asked me if I’d host one of E.ON’s Menopause Cafes. My initial reaction was why on earth would she want a middle aged male to get involved. Then it struck me, that’s the whole point. The lack of awareness about the symptoms of the Menopause means that far too often women feel isolated and alone when trying to deal with its impacts. If you’re reading this and wondering what the big deal is, please get curious. Seek to understand the range of symptoms that the Menopause has and how they impact women and then think about how you can support colleagues, friends and family who might be experiencing them. It’s simply scandalous that we are seeing women leaving work because of a lack of understanding and support. If you are reading this and still don’t get it, just consider the body of research that shows organisations who have diverse workforces and leadership are more successful than those that don’t. Can your company really afford to lose the knowledge and talent that women who are going through the Menopause have? #Menopause

"The topic of the menopause is becoming less taboo in some countries, as grassroots campaigns like Menopause Mandate and Let's Talk Menopause help break down stigma and build awareness. Yet its professional impact on women (and anyone who experiences the menopause) remains largely unaddressed, say experts. In a late 2023 survey, UK workplace-healthcare provider SimplyHealth surveyed more than 2,000 working women aged 40 to 60. Twenty-three percent considered resigning due to the impact of the menopause, and 14% are said thy are planning to hand in their notice. Although the survey's sample size is small relative to the seven-million women in the UK workforce in that age bracket, it does support anecdotal evidence from women speaking out publicly about their experiences as a menopausal worker. And if the issue remains unaddressed, it could impact millions of workers who take the same decision to leave. Plus, even for workers who don't leave, the financial toll of sick days, unpaid leave and missed opportunities due to menopause adds up to an astronomical cost. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic estimate women's losses at $1.8bn (£1.43) per year in the US alone." #Menopause #Inclusion #Diversity https://lnkd.in/gJZHxFBs
