It has been a big week in the Social Health sphere... and it's only Tuesday! This morning, I had the delight of chatting with a representative of Pittsburgh Tomorrow about what the region needs to attract and retain residents and how Pittsburgh Social Health might supplement these efforts. It is heartening to know that many PGH community members are invested in making our city more welcoming and engaging, and I look forward to seeing what we accomplish as a collective. This afternoon, I also tuned into the 2024 Global Loneliness Awareness Summit hosted by The Coalition to End Social Isolation & Loneliness & The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Each session was chock full of valuable prompts and insights into how we can tackle loneliness as a nation - and why it matters. The reality is this: many of us feel that social isolation and loneliness is a personal issue or shortcoming, but that could not be further from the truth. Loneliness is an experience that we will likely all have at some point(s) in our lives, regardless of political party, age, location, class, race, spiritual affiliation, etc. The more that we can recognize loneliness as a cue to prioritize social connection, the better we can set ourselves up for resilience and moving forward. As we observe #GlobalLonelinessAwarenessWeek from June 10-16th, I hope that these conversations, on the local and national level, begin to change the culture around seeking connection and prioritizing our social health. P.S. !! Today also marks the 7-day countdown to Kasley Killam, MPH's book release for "The Art and Science of Connection," which I cannot wait to get my hands on! In a culture that heavily emphasizes individual improvement, it is refreshing to see the importance of interpersonal connection being highlighted. Looking forward to diving in on 6/18! 📖 #globalonelinessawarenessweek #endloneliness #socialhealth #socialconnection

At Mare’s House, we believe that a quality transitional living program should provide more than a place to work on recovery. We believe that transitional living should also be a space for cultivating personal development. One of the ways we encourage our members’ personal development is through mandatory employment. What *is* peer support? 🤝 According to Peer Support Canada, “peer support is emotional and practical support between two people who share a common experience.” Across Canada, there are various peer support programs for those who have shared, lived experiences around a range of physical and/or mental health conditions or have similar shared life experiences (for example: violence or trauma). At Restorations, we offer a Survivor-Led Peer Support Program. This special space has been thoughtfully created *by survivors* of human trafficking and exploitation, exclusively *for survivors* of human trafficking and exploitation. Our program works hand in hand with other services at Restorations, aiming to foster collaborative relationships that empower survivors. Our mission is to mobilize resources, provide a community, nurture re-integration, and support autonomy building through a combination of skill construction and wellness planning activities. #peersupport #humantrafficking

This startling statistic was revealed in a Queensland-led study. The joint study between The University of Queensland and Harvard Medical School tracked 150,000 adults across 29 countries over two decades. Today, on World Mental Health Day we will be profiling four of our innovative consumer-centric facilities transforming mental health facilities across Australia. At dwp, we focus on developing healthcare resilience through architecture that nurtures healthy communities for better end-user experiences. #WorldMentalHealthDay #dwpdesign #Resilience #Architecture

Are you in the professional business of caring? So many of us are! If you identify as a caregiver, mental health clinician, counselor, social worker, healthcare professional, criminal justice advocate, public health, community worker, therapeutic specialist, creative arts or occupational therapist... (this is definitely not an exhaustive list!) then you're probably familiar with the impact that compassion fatigue can have on your personal and professional life. Layer this with your intersectional identities - race, gender identity, sexual orientation, empath, and highly sensitive people to name a few - and the possibility of experiencing compassion fatigue drastically increases. The “cost of caring” for others who are in emotional pain can be very real for caregivers and helping professionals, often leading to intense physical and psychological deterioration (harvard.edu). Join us for our upcoming Safe Space Initiative (SSI) community forum on Wednesday August 23, 2023 at 6:30 - 8:00 PM CST (virtually on Zoom) as we explore: what is compassion fatigue, why is this topic so important to us, what the hell can we do about it and why is radical self love pivotal?! Share this opportunity with others in your professional networks and friend circles who could benefit from this! Registration required - https://lnkd.in/eNdk9iuQ OR check out the link in our IG profile.

Gender Justice / LGBTQIA+ Rights / Policy Advocacy / Communications Strategist / Youth Engagement 📖 ✍️ Steering Committee - Global Fund’s Gender Equality Fund
Organizations nowadays, especially within the social justice movement, are prioritizing hiring people with lived experiences to work on the issues they program for. It is very common to see calls for job applications stating that they’d prefer applicants who have experienced the specific problem the organization or project is working on. This is great, as it gives ownership of solutions to those experiencing the problem and can better assess needs, reach the community and actually program with them at the forefront. But then, do you realize that this is re-traumatizing the people you employ to do this work? They end up reliving their pain every day at work. They soak in similar experiences of others like them and the circle of trauma just keeps layering up. It never ends. So, beyond salaries for the job, what support structures are organizations putting in place for their staff working on traumatic issues they have personally experienced and in some cases, are still experiencing? How can you, as an organization, support them to survive better, as you farm their lived experiences to achieve results? Is there mental health support? Is there compensation for using their lived experiences? Is there workplace safeguards to protect their exposure to constant trauma? I think it’s time we start having this conversation more often.

As a county, like many others, we’re facing challenges with an ageing population, increased demand for services, mental health and wellbeing concerns in young people and significant inequality in the health of our residents. The new health and wellbeing strategy for Oxfordshire, developed in partnership with colleagues across the county, will give power to our communities, and continue to identify and deliver what is needed to support people to make healthy choices, live independently and stay happier and healthier for longer. We’re now asking residents whether we’ve got it right – does it make sense for Oxfordshire? If you live, work or have family in the county, why not have your say? https://lnkd.in/e-zsxnxx

I have found as a Counsellor that by being with my peers, brings a real sense of we’re all in this together. They just ‘get it’. We’re humans first, then therapists. We spend a lot of our time ‘holding’ our clients, working to support them with their needs/goals. Our work is incredibly rewarding, but we also need to have space to feel held, supported, heard and validated. 👉🏼 I don’t need to explain what I do for my job. 👉🏼 I feel a real sense of ease to be in their company. 👉🏼 it’s a relief to know that I’m not alone with the juggling that comes with running a practice while looking after my family. 👉🏼 it brings light-heartedness, openness and honesty. 👉🏼 I’ve had some of the most ‘realest’ conversations with my peers, less ‘small talk’ more let’s get real talk. 👉🏼 It’s feeling connected and part of a special community that not everyone will understand. It’s refreshing, it’s open, it’s warts and all, it’s being human ❤️ P.s We do have space for peer support/CPD groups at our therapy services in Hove, check out our space here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e5ypMaG3 How do you feel being around and connected with your peers? Let’s share in the comments 👇🏼 #peersupport #privatepractice #counsellors #psychotherapists #connection #community
