Everyone experiences mental health struggles, and yet seeking care is still stigmatized in many communities. The goal of this month is to break the stigma of seeking mental health care and make accessing to mental health treatment and services easier. ➡️ People who identify as being two or more races (24.9%) are most likely to report any mental illness within the past year than any other race/ethnic group. ➡️ Suicide is the second leading cause of death for Indigenous and Native Americans between the ages of 10 and 34. ➡️ Research shows that only one in three Black Americans who need mental health care actually receive it. Being one week closer to World Mental Health Day, #LetsTalk about how we talk about mental health conditions. The words we choose shape not only how we perceive these conditions but also how we interact with those who experience them. Sensitivity in language is essential to reduce stigma and foster understanding. By using respectful and person-first language, we acknowledge the individual before their condition, affirming their dignity. Using the right terminology also helps healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers communicate effectively and develop targeted interventions. #LanguageMatters #MentalHealthMatters #WorldMentalHealthDay2023

Language matters. What we say and how we say it is important. The words we use and the tone along with body language conveys the meaning and the intent. Example (in caps for emphasis and meaning): I didn’t SAY you ate my cookie. I didn’t say YOU ate my cookie. I didn’t say you ATE my cookie. Same words. Different meaning. When we are aware of what we say, how we say it…then we can ask ourselves: Is that what I meant? Is that me being my best self? Recognizing mental health as a basic human right is not only essential for encouraging individuals to seek help when needed but also for nurturing a #healthier and more inclusive society. #Data from the World Health Organization shows that nearly one billion people worldwide grapple with some form of mental disorder, including one in seven teenagers. What's even more shocking is that 70% of those dealing with psychosis don't receive the help they need. Investing in mental health facilities and using data-driven #evidence to eliminate the #stigma associated with seeking mental health services is what we need right now to ensure everyone feels safe and supported.
