I wrote a little blog post on the future of the Residence Director position. Thank you Paul Gordon Brown, PhD for the opportunity. I worked in Residence Life from 2000 - 2015, serving as a Resident Assistant, Assistant First Year Advisor / Graduate Hall Director, House Director, Hall Director, Assistant Director, and Director of Residence Life. My residence life experiences were some of the hardest and some of the best. And because I lived on campus for the entirety of these experiences, these memories are core memories - right alongside other life milestones like graduating, earning my masters degrees, getting married, and having children. Some of my very best friends and professional mentors come from Residence Life. To say I love it doesn't quite cover the emotions I feel around my time as a housing professional. And I also believe we (higher education) has a lot of work to do in ensuring our residence life professionals are supported, cared for, are able to balance their lives, and feel like the integral part of campus life that they are. So...here's my silly, pop-culture-infused blog post that hopefully shares these important messages: * Residence Life is hard work staffed by harder working professionals * Residence Life's mission supports the university mission * If you've never done residence life work, making decisions about its value and importance may be challenging * Residence life is asked to do too much * We're going to lose (burn out) incredible staff members if we don't reframe the RD role #highereducation #leadership #valuepeople #residencelife https://lnkd.in/eC6gjN3j

These qualities are essential in nurturing a supportive and engaging campus culture. 🌟📈 As we recognize the crucial role of Residence Life professionals in shaping student experiences, let's also acknowledge the importance of thoughtful, intentional hiring practices in this field. People Connector | Career Matchmaker | Insurance Geek 😉 A recruiter to know if you're an insurance professional sick of hiring/job search BS. 👊
The preschool my son went to had it figured out when it comes to hiring and retaining great employees. When we checked them out a few years ago, it had this cozy, caring vibe you could feel. I instantly loved it and it came highly recommended by many parents I knew. Near the end of the tour, the Director said to me, "I want to let you know that our holiday breaks and summer breaks are a little longer than average. We recognize that it's hard for a person to work here because we only offer 6 hour work days and our industry is not one that supports very high wages, but it's important work. So in order to attract great employees and keep them, we give flexibility - longer breaks and longer summers so our team has more time off which is especially beneficial when they have young children or grandchildren of their own home for summer, Christmas, Spring break, etc." She added, "This has helped us significantly with finding and keeping great people in a super competitive industry. Some of our team has been here over 25 years. They refer their friends. One of our teachers here is a grandmother and her daughter works here now too." "We know we aren't in a position to offer people tons of money so we give what we can: time." That comment has stuck with me ever since. "Give what you can." If you're an employer offering no flexibility, wages that aren't competitive, and your search is limited to say, a 30 mile radius (that's about the max. people are interested in commuting anymore).... Know that the candidate pool you're hiring from will likely yield adverse selection. The "good ones" are being scooped up by your competitors. 😉 #hiring #insurancejobs #itssimple #competitivejobmarket #insurancecareer #cpcu #cic #cisr #realitycheck

Being a hostel student supervisor is a rewarding role, I was driven by various motivating factors. Firstly, the opportunity to positively impact students' lives and contribute to their personal and academic growth was a significant motivator and factor. As a supervisor, I can create a supportive environment, fostering a sense of community and belonging among my students. The role also offers me a chance to develop my leadership and interpersonal skills. Managing diverse groups of students and addressing their concerns will enhance my problem-solving abilities and communication skills. The aspect of personal and professional development was a strong motivator for me when I was seeking growth and advancement in my career. The sense of responsibility and the ability to make a difference in the hostel community was deeply inspiring. A supervisor plays a crucial role in maintaining discipline, ensuring safety, and promoting a healthy living environment. Knowing that I will contribute to the well-being of students and help create a positive living and learning atmosphere was also a powerful motivation. Moreover, the role provides opportunities for building relationships and networking. Interacting with students, staff, and parents can create a valuable network that extends beyond the immediate responsibilities of the position. This networking potential was appealing for me because I value building connections and seeking opportunities for future collaborations. Additionally, the varied nature of the role, which involves handling diverse situations, challenges, and personalities, will be intellectually stimulating. Problem-solving and decision-making become integral aspects, making the position suitable for me because I thrive in dynamic and ever-changing environments. Lastly, the sense of pride and fulfillment derived from witnessing the personal and academic progress of my students under my supervision was powerful motivation. Seeing my positive impact of guidance and support on individuals' lives will create a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose for me. In conclusion, my motivation to be a hostel student supervisor stemed from the desire to make a positive impact on students, personal and professional development opportunities, build a sense of responsibility, networking potential, intellectual stimulation, and the fulfillment I will derive from witnessing the growth of the students under my supervision. #supervisor #studentservices #childcare #influencer #guardianship #support #university #experiencethedifference #challenge
