Working in nursing homes and assisted living communities all of my professional life, I have found these are the key things front line team members care about and notice the most: 1. How respectful leadership (administrator, department heads, etc.) are towards them 2. How respectful leadership are to one another at the center 3. How respectful regional and corporate employees are to leadership and frontline team members at the center 4. Promptness of annual evaluations and increases 5. Flexibility with schedules 6. Employee recognition 7. Growth opportunities 8. Competency with diversity and inclusion concepts 9. Compassion shown to patients and their families by the Administrator and Department Hesd team 10. How well leadership listens to and acts on front line team member feedback/suggestions 11. Thoughtfulness of leadership during the holidays (quality and location of holiday parties, holiday gifts to staff, recognition and compassion re: personal stress of staff during the holidays.) The truth about nurse leadership? Too often, nurses chase leadership roles for higher salaries or titles. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in paying people well. However, if your purpose is solely self-serving, you shouldn’t pursue leadership. If you can’t advocate for those working under you and push them to be the best version of themselves, you shouldn’t pursue leadership. Check your ego at the door and remember why you come to work every day. 🧩 I ran across this picture in my archives today that I took of one of my residents about 5 years ago when I 👀 caught him putting together a puzzle with such finesse and speed that I couldn't help but ask him, "How in the world did you learn to be so good at puzzles?" To my surprise, his response was simple yet profound and has stuck with me every since “It takes patience, young man." His words really got me thinking. In the hustle and bustle of our daily responsibilities as nursing home administrators, it's easy to get caught up in the fast-paced environment and forget the importance of patience. But this senior's wisdom serves as a valuable leadership lesson. Just like putting together a puzzle, leading a team and managing a facility requires patience. It's about taking the time to listen, understand, and guide others with compassion and empathy. It's about staying calm in the face of challenges and trusting the process, even when things seem uncertain. So, to all my fellow nursing home administrators out there, let's remember the lesson from our wise senior: patience is key. Let's approach our roles with the same level of patience and perseverance, knowing that every piece will eventually fall into place. Whilst attending a farewell party of another company, I spoke with some nursing and kitchen colleagues to understand why staff are leaving that company and what process did the manager go through before staff choose to leave abruptly. A few interesting points came up: (1) The facility manager (FM) had never informed the staff about the newly regulated requirements of 200 care minutes, and how it affects the rostering system. (2) The FM spoke to all staff on her first day of work in a manner of 'Don't tell me you are short of staff, our occupancy level is not full.' (3) Rather than holding discussion of why staff are not achieving a goal, the FM keeps sending emails and says 'this is not an acceptable standard'. (4) The FM tells every staff and resident representatives to book an appointment should anyone wish to speak with her. People often find her door closed or dismissive if they want to approach her. (5) Nearby social workers had stopped referring clients to the facility due to poor feedback from newly admitted residents. This is not the first time or first company's story I hear on why an aged care is not running well. It is correct to say that aged care managers are struggling to keep up the pace of the upcoming drastic changes, yet these examples also show why staff are not working with a FM because they were never informed of what is the current goal. As a bystander, I find this very heart breaking of FMs don't understand the basic management requirements to successfully lead a group of people. Management knowledge may have come from books, but skills and methods come from experience and from our hearts. Everyone can tell whether there is a good manager at a certain facility. The appearance of the aged care may not look like a brand new shiny hotel, but the people in it can tell you whether they feel the warmth of 'home like environment'.
