Exactly one year ago I went to London for my first day at Simply Sustainable, and I’ve been building our business in the Netherlands since. It’s been an incredible year, in which I’ve had the opportunity to engage and work with sustainability leaders on all kinds of topics - about how to create a focused and robust sustainability strategy, about setting ambitious yet realistic targets, about modeling emissions reduction pathways… What have I learned about the state of sustainability among Dutch businesses? - The topic is squarely on the agenda, and many companies are exploring how they can work more sustainability and responsibly, not just because of new regulation but because it’s the right thing to do and because it’s their future business. So much so that we’re currently reviewing a company’s entire value proposition. - Dutch companies are extremely pragmatic in their approach to the sustainability agenda. Don’t come with abstract, complicated frameworks. Just make it simple, and lay out the steps to meeting their goals. I’ve found that ‘Simply Sustainable’ and our way of working really resonate. As one person told me: “The promise is in the name.” - Everyone is learning. Sustainability is in many ways still a new and evolving business topic and new perspectives and questions emerge regularly. This is very much why I took the initiative to bring together sustainability professionals every quarter to explore one sustainability topic in more depth. Looking back, I’m proud of what we’ve established with Simply Sustainable in such a short period of time and I’m very grateful for all those that have given us the opportunity to work with them.

💡 👯♀️ New role & open to network: Innovation, transformation & thought leadership within corporate sustainability While my new role is no longer 'breaking news', I've had the time to settle into the job. Now, this means I have the bandwidth to connect more widely with those of you who are working on fast-tracking corporate sustainable development in effective and viable ways. Hence, I'm very curious to ideate, share knowledge and explore collaboration on challenges and opportunities I believe could accelerate the transition - such as, but not exclusively: > Business model innovation & design: How to commercialise sustainability while increasing resource productivity > Financial risk quantification: How to monetise the risk of unsustainable practices, to ensure corporate decision-making is evidence-based > Planetary boundaries & decoupling: How can businesses set targets and operate within a finite world in a manner that is fair and just > Progressive advocacy: Companies cannot create system change on an individual basis, but there are good examples of companies driving the political agenda together (e.g circular economy). How might we leverage corporate influence? Feel free to reach out - perhaps we can combine it with a hot coffee or cold beer - and otherwise, you might get a message from me soon :) #corporatesustainability #innovation #thoughtleadership #knowledgesharing https://lnkd.in/d3cSDGGJ

We do so to continue deepening our expertise in new areas and develop effective solutions that help companies drive real change. Meet Maja Johannessen - our new Head of Innovation & Knowledge "Sustainability is an ever-evolving and complex field to navigate. My main ambition in this role is to ensure we and our clients continue to stay ahead of the curve, by ensuring that innovation, learning and thought leadership are an integral part of our organisation and the work we do."

The journey towards sustainability is not just about choosing the right thing to do. It is about understanding deeply the ground on which these decisions stand. This understanding is rooted in strong, evidence-based decision-making processes that can transform how companies perceive their context and the developmental trajectories they choose. In an era where sustainability challenges are as complex as they are critical, the path to corporate resilience and responsibility is fraught with the need for nuanced decision-making. As a sustainability professional, the journey of creating and publishing your first sustainability report is profoundly meaningful. ❓ It involves critical decisions and tradeoffs: You are debating your scope, identifying material topics, and strategizing for diverse audiences, from investors to customers, employees, and society at large. 😅 You are hands on - sometimes visiting office to count the appliances, refrigerants, chillers in the building or calculating the mileage of colleagues' travels, and doing your absolute best to accurately accurately measure the company's footprint. ✍You find yourself donning multiple hats - a designer, writer, lawyer, and sometimes even a therapist during moments of frustration for you and your colleagues. But through it all, the lessons learned make every challenge worthwhile. Over the past year, Nicolette Brenden Caroline Pittard Annika Prinz @chole and I went from nearly publishing a report to reimagining it for a larger scope and finally seeing it through the finish line! ✨ Lessons learned: a. Bold ambitions require concrete plans. Thank you Andy Anderson, LEED AP, CMVP, CEM for empowering our ambition and ensuring our commitments are grounded in science and supported by a robust delivery plan. b. Collaboration is everything. Sustainability touches every corner of the organization, requiring teamwork across departments for success. Our HR, legal and marketing team love us now 😋 ) c. ESG scrutiny is real. You will have to manage your report's language and commitments. But that should not derail your vision and commitment! I am beyond thrilled to share our labor of love and Tango's inaugural sustainability report! https://lnkd.in/dnrtSPAB Appreciate the support and commitment that our investors Berkshire Partners, leaders Pranav Tyagi Bart Waldeck Brad Biagini Andy Anderson, LEED AP, CMVP, CEM Kathy Fischer Linda Connelly have shown to integrate sustainability across the value chain and truly walk the talk! Celine Solsken Ruben-Salama you'd be proud ! ;) #sustainabilityreport #milestone

As a business and CSR leader, I’m often asked how we know that our responsible business initiatives are helping to drive positive societal change. I like this question because I’m very serious about tracking and measuring our progress. Our approach, in brief, is to set very specific goals that are aligned with our business strategy and that enable us to tap all of Verizon’s resources. We embed both quantitative and qualitative measurement tools to ensure our short- and long-term goals are on track. In fact, we have roles entirely devoted to measurement and analytics and we work closely with independent third-party groups that measure and audit our progress. Our recent announcement regarding the Verizon Innovative Learning Schools initiatives reaching more than 7 million students - well on our way to our goal of 10 million by 2030 -- is testament to this commitment. Programmatic measurement is one of the areas I discuss in the March 2024 edition of Sustainability Magazine. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/ezujcFfc

I recently attended an academic event on sustainability. After the main discussion the panel opened up to questions from the audience. Given the panel had just been discussing the SDGs, the first question was about IDGs. I believe the person who asked the question had only just discovered the acronym IDGs and genuinely hoped to know more about them. It was clear that the moderator didn’t know what IDGs were (Inner Development Goals) and instead of saying as such proceeded to interpret the “I” to refer to individual sustainability actions. He then passed the mic around to each member of the panel who discussed individual sustainability actions at length 🤔 Pro tip: it’s ok to say you don’t know something. Bluffing is dangerous because there is usually (hopefully) someone in the room who knows more than you. If I don’t know something, I say so. It’s actually a pretty cool power move, because only very confident people will say when they don’t know something in a professional space. It’s also quite a useful strategy for disrupting the energy of a discussion: I’ve literally had people go pie-eyed when I say “I have no idea” 😂 A bit more information about the IDGs below for those who are interested 👇
