During my master’s thesis internship at Robeco, I studied the use of variance-covariance (VCV) matrix estimation for risk-based portfolio optimization. Afterwards, together with my former internship supervisors Clint Howard, Harald Lohre, and Maarten Jansen, we continued to develop this work into a paper. I am happy to share that our paper is now available to read on SSRN: https://lnkd.in/ez7D_Rug. Our main findings are: 1. When validating more novel and complex VCVs on the standard GMV portfolio, they indeed achieve substantial volatility reductions. 2. However, when moving to more practical portfolios (such as a constrained long-only portfolio), the opportunity set for these alternative VCV estimators is considerably smaller.
