I often think about how lucky I was to go to "bad" public schools growing up. 👉 Outdated textbooks and broken facilities 👉 Often in the news for the negative reasons 👉 Sometimes chaotically led, but graced by deeply passionate teachers I was lucky because: 1. The schools were a microcosm of the world, which IS messy and mismanaged. I got a real world education, and graduated with a reality check in my diploma. 2. I made friends who were like me in essential ways (nerdy, sensitive, prone to joining theater and marching band) and different in ways that opened our worlds. I don't think we knew then the richness of coming from every different possible background, culturally and socio-economically. But, today, when I see the tired, fear-mongering and identity-based political rhetoric on repeat, it's clear what a gift it is to know the creative and social strengths in difference. It's clear that I went to excellent schools. I recently helped research and write about the "welcoming movement" in America. Hyper local, cross-sector, and growing, this work ensures that all neighbors, including immigrants and refugees, belong. My favorite evidence: 👉 Communities that welcome diversity have higher GDPs, stronger democracies, and less lonliness. I now live in a socio-economic and political bubble in San Francisco where I see the other end of the spectrum: more homogenous thinking and experiences. And I've gotta say, there's a social poverty and loss of perspective in sameness. Expanding beyond your bubble takes effort. The inspiring news is that there are so many ways for everyone—from individuals to business leaders—to engage in welcoming work and connect with people from varied backgrounds. Check out how to get involved via Welcoming America's inaugural State of Welcoming Report: https://lnkd.in/eZ6VQ2f3 #research #diversity #inclusion #belonging

Uplift, Empower, Unite: Mary McLean for a Brighter Sault Tribe 🔊 Attention Tribal Members: It's time for accountability within our Sault Tribe Board of Directors. We need our directors to prioritize attendance at all meetings in person, unless there are exceptional circumstances. While technology is a great tool, there's no substitute for being physically present. When our leaders commit to being somewhere, it's crucial they follow through. It's disheartening when they fail to represent us effectively, leaving team members to explain their absence. Just as we expect our employees to be reliable, our BOD members must also fulfill their duties. Accountability starts at the top, and as your potential Unit One representative, I pledge to lead by example. If elected, I'll always show up and step up for our tribe. Hold me accountable, as I'm committed to being a true voice for our community. Let's ensure our BOD members uphold their responsibilities to our people, organization, and stakeholders. Together, we can demand the accountability our tribe deserves.⏳

What a great backstory. The power of a boy and his dog. At the heart of the Shane & Pepper Foundation are two extraordinary souls: Shane Popiny and Pepper. Shane, a resilient pediatric stroke survivor with cerebral palsy, exhibits the very essence of strength and determination. His journey, paired with his neurodiverse perspective, has provided him unique insights into the myriad challenges faced by many in our society. By his side is Pepper, a loyal mobility service dog, whose unwavering support symbolizes the limitless possibilities of companionship and teamwork. Our mission is deeply rooted in their bond and shared experiences. We are committed to promoting a world of inclusion, where every individual, regardless of their abilities or differences, feels seen, heard, and valued. We champion equality by acknowledging and respecting every person's inherent worth and right to opportunities. Beyond this, we pursue equity, striving to provide the necessary tools and resources tailored to each person's unique circumstances, ensuring they can achieve their fullest potential. Recognizing the vast talents and potential within the disability and neurodiverse communities, the Shane & Pepper Foundation has crafted holistic programs aimed at fostering social, life, culinary, and vocational skills. Our vision is clear: to prepare these exceptional individuals for the workforce and life, ensuring they not only have a place in our society but also thrive in it. #inclusion #equity #vocationalskills https://lnkd.in/eYZazkdB

Our inaugural Conference on Building Anti-racist Multiracial Community was a resounding success! Participants from across the nation convened for a powerful weekend, immersing themselves in the core ethos of CSWAC: dismantling systems of whiteness and collaboratively constructing an anti-racist, #multiracial society. Feedback from our longtime partners, who were also a conference mission-aligned organization, the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond: "We want to acknowledge the anti-racist organizing that is going on. That organizing is central to building an anti-racist, multiracial, and multicultural community." The passion and dedication of our attendees were remarkable. Together, we delved deep into pressing issues, working towards a more just and #inclusive future. This event was just the beginning! "We see systemic racism playing out in such a classic way right before our eyes. It is not just the radical groups, it is the whole system." - The People's Institute Stay tuned for more insights, follow-ups, and ways to stay engaged with the CSWAC #community. Save the date for our 2024 conference: September 27-29, 2024 (location TBA). Let's continue this journey toward equity together. Thank you for being part of this crucial movement! https://cswac.org/

A BALANCED DISC FLIES FURTHEST A disc that is not evenly balanced when thrown, does not spin smoothly and its flight falls short of the potential it had for the force that it carried from the effort of the thrower. Families, institutions and even nations are no different. Balance makes the flight reach its full potential. Institutions including businesses and governments that are dominated by a few clans rarely go far. For example nepotism in areas such as politics, community and business that seeks to perpetuate exclusivity has been known to fail to deliver the outcomes expected of leadership. Here is a short video (4 mins) of the concept of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) that is gathering momentum in workplaces and organizations. The speaker, Jerome Foster II (born 2002) is an American environmental activist. He is the youngest-ever White House advisor in United States history, as a member of the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council within the Biden administration. Foster is a leading voice for marginalized and working class communities in spaces pushing for social, economic and environmental justice. https://lnkd.in/ggxe94dt Nations and institutions will do well to consider the benefits that will accrue if sections of people who are under-represented are included and those that feel unwelcome in society are made to feel comfortable and at home. Many a challenge faced today in nations and communities would have been avoided or at least mitigated if generations gone by had been more sensitive to the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion. We can shape the future if we have the courage to change our mindsets. #goodgovernance #DEI
