“There's only so much energy you can expend trying to remind people who you are and what your level of training and experience [is]...” 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 💯 This AMA article highlights takeaways from a study by Norvell et al. on Addressing Burnout Among Women Residents: Results from Focus Group Discussions. Women in healthcare expend extra bandwidth navigating biases. Women of all identities want to be able to show up in professional spaces, take up space, and do their work, without having to navigate coming up against systemic inequities. Data shows women are excellent health care clinicians: https://lnkd.in/ewDwMijX I think it a fair hypothesis that our healthcare systems would benefit exponentially if we provided women with work environments which supported their flourishing. #womenempoweringwomen #womeninmedicine #womeninhealthcare #womeninhealth #womencoaching #bias #equity #equitymatters #coachingforwomen Learn more about how we can work together during a free 30 minute meeting at drjulieradico.com References: 1. https://lnkd.in/eHHzcv3C 2. https://lnkd.in/eEM55Gpu

Marketing, Business Development, and Revenue Growth Strategist for Subscription-Based Spinal CSF Leak Care Business Models in Private Practice
As the ADA anniversary nears, we must speak out about accessibility and healthcare inaccessibility that extends beyond architecture. There are many factors that contribute to healthcare accessibility. Medical misogyny to mask incompetence is one factor. Women patients know this barrier well; the harder we fight for care, the more assertive we are, the more physicians turn our medical notes into a case against us as hysterical women. In a video I watched recently on Instagram, a woman was making a joke about how physicians were shuffling her from one specialist to another and then finally the neurologist diagnosed her with depression. "Careful," a commenter posted. "Now they'll hold that against you forever and you'll never get care." How true this comment is. Personally, I have never encountered a competent physician who wrote damaging comments in my medical notes. In my experience, it is the physicians who do not know and cannot admit it who then go above and beyond to destroy the patients' believability by creating a narrative of hysteria in the women patients' notes. My brother who is my caretaker has had open heart surgery due to a congenital heart defect. He sits in on my appointment and suddenly I am taken more seriously. He still is absolutely exhausted by the constant references to "anxiety" instead of physicians addressing anatomical problems. He is shocked at the difference in how we are treated in our respective healthcare experiences with obvious discrepancies by gender. I still remember arriving at an orthopedic surgeon's office with an objectively fractured spine that's poking into the lining around my spinal cord only for the surgeon to ask me first if I had explored "anxiety" as an option. Sitting in the corner, my brother sighed and placed his head in his hands. As a person who presents as incredibly calm, my pain is often disbelieved. However, physicians need a way to explain my symptoms. And thus "anxiety" appears. In my experience, most physicians know that they possess a competence gap in spinal leaks, and instead of addressing this gap by seeking out further education, they instead seek to protect their ego by quieting my voice and dismissing me as an anxious woman. These same physicians often attempt to prevent me from seeking out a second opinion that might show up their lack of competence by doing damage control and damaging my character in my notes. For this anniversary of the ADA, it's time to increase accessibility in healthcare for disabled patients by fighting back against egotistical physicians intentionally damaging our future access to care by writing notes that make a case against us. Image Description: A male doctor wearing a mask sits next to a woman patient who lies in a hospital bed with a perplexed look on her face. "The representation of four groups in the healthcare workforce is lower than their representation in the general population: women, people of color, sexual- and gender-diverse individuals, and people with disabilities. This lack of diversity is crucial to note because studies show that patients from underserved racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual communities are more satisfied with their care and more likely to adhere to medical advice when they have a doctor with comparable life experiences." #lgbtqia #lgbtqhealth #healthdisparities #peoplewithdisabilities #racialjustice #womenshealth #healthequity
