Military customs and courtesies form the bedrock of the armed forces' profession. By exemplifying these customs in diverse scenarios, you exhibit your unwavering dedication to duty, honor, and country, both to yourself and to those around you. • These customs encompass a range of practices, such as acknowledging the presence of a senior officer, recognizing their rank or distinguished position, employing appropriate military titles, wearing headgear as required, rendering proper salutes, and paying due respect to national and Army symbols and music. #MilitaryMakeover #MilitaryCustoms #MilitaryCourtesies #Customs

I appreciate the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide asking these difficult questions. There is much to say on the topic regarding the large and small changes that have taken place over the years. The issue is that whilst changes have taken place and some improvements made, in many instances changes haven’t necessarily equaled progress; especially in some areas such as partner employment. When I wrote my Winston Churchill Trust (Australia) Fellowship report in 2018 I pointed out that *all* of Sue Hamilton ‘s recommendations regarding employment were still relevant, and many had never been implemented. As I wrote about recently the employment support program has changed many, many times, and today delivers less support than it did in the early 2000s. A major change to family policy occurred with the rewriting of policy circa 2010 with language that shifted the model to one of “self-reliance”. If ever in the decade since anyone felt that a more holistic approach was needed they should have started with the Defence Family Policy Manual and its basis in self-reliance (a conversation for another day). A good example of how it was unfit for purpose was partner employment - tucked under mobility support which resulted in Defence being unable to address the impact that absence from home (including long deployments to Afghanistan) has on a partners career. In 2021 I wrote to Minister Chester suggesting another ‘Hamilton Review’ to “generate fit-for-purpose policy and programs that will better serve the current and future ADF and veteran generations”. Sue is still a trusted and relied upon expert for several of us in the family space. Just recently I asked her the favor of being a peer reviewed if I am successful in a program application. All families owe her an enormous debt of gratitude. Thank you also to those who have worked tirelessly over the years to improve family policy and generate some of the positive changes that have been made. Julie Blackburn Robyn Ritchie Maree Sirois (and all the DFA Convenors that came before you), Michelle Hoare, the Defence Families of Australia (DFA) team (current and former). And those such as Rebecca Rayner and Claire Harris (CPM) showing us new and effective ways of supporting contemporary families. Matt Keogh
"If Defence is serious in saying that our people are our most important asset and our families are all about enhancing our capability and our readiness, are we actually putting the resources into the families that are needed?" Commissioner Peggy Brown asks Major General Wade Stothart, the Head of Military Personnel, Defence People Group during the Adelaide hearing of the Royal Commission. #DVSRC

The US Military's mission is to defend and win wars. But recruiting has become increasingly complex, hindering our ability to achieve that goal. It's time for politicians to step aside and let the Military do what it does best- focus on teamwork, commitment to mission, and duty, honor, and country. By recruiting warriors with the highest standards and utilizing retiree/veteran assistance, we can promote sacrifice, heroism, and gallantry. Let's stop treating our Military as a social experiment and instead promote total victory for America. #MilitaryRecruiting #Teamwork #DutyHonorCountry

The lost ships and men of the Navy An oft-repeated suggestion concerning Australia’s military history is that there is only one remaining warship not yet located of those sunk in World War II. But how true is that? Of course, most people assume that a lost vessel was lost in combat, with a concomitant loss of life. This is not necessarily the case. There are many vessels lost by accident, and a few that simply disappeared, and so may have met their end either in a fight or through misadventure. This article analyses both categories, and arrives at a conclusion. - https://lnkd.in/gB_UUHkA
