What's the difference between contingent (contract) recruiting and direct hire recruiting / recruiting for permanent roles for third party recruiters? As a candidate, you'll notice some differences in behavior, and that's what we'll dig into today. When a third-party recruiter takes on a search for a direct hire / permanent role, they are typically paid in one of 2 ways: 1⃣ The recruiter/staffing company is paid a % of your first year's salary (in some cases, total compensation). I've seen placement fees anywhere from 10% to 50%. 2⃣ The recruiter/staffing company charges a flat fee for any hire made at any level (i.e. whether they're placing an executive or an entry level person, they are charging the client the same fee). Depending on the client and the recruiting company, fees are typically paid upon successful placement (you starting the job), which is referred to as a contingent model. Other options typically include retainers and what I'll call containers. I call them containers because a client pays an engagement fee to start the search and then pays the balance of the placement fee after the placement is made - it's a hybrid retained / contingent model. There are other ways, but I've only got so many characters here. 💡As a candidate, why is this important?💡 🔑 Recruiters / staffing companies are paid based on your compensation. If you're qualified and they want to get your attention, you're more than likely getting their best offer up front. Remember, in contract recruiting, more money for you typically means less money for them. The opposite is true in direct hire recruiting, assuming the client has the budget to accommodate your request/salary range. 🔑 Recruiters working on direct hire / permanent roles typically take a more consultative approach to you and your career. Bold statement. Why is that? In contract recruiting/staffing, it can be as simple finding the first warm body who has the skill set and is open to doing the job. A recruiter places you in a role and makes money on you as long as you're working. Sure, it makes sense for them to keep you happy, but contract recruiting is traditionally a volume game. The more people you have billing, the more money you make. In direct hire recruiting, there's usually a guarantee period. It's a transfer of risk from the client to the recruiter/staffing company to ensure the client is making the right hire. I've seen these guarantee periods range from 0-12 months with the average being about 90 days. From a recruiting standpoint, the shift goes from finding the first qualified and available candidate to finding the right fit for both the client and the candidate. It doesn't do them any good to try and place a square peg into a round hole and have it not work out. They won't get paid. Comments or questions? Leave them here or reach out in DMs!

While in-house recruiters have their advantages, outsourcing to a recruiting firm provides a more cost-effective and efficient solution. Allowing you to move forward with candidates who remain in the running. ✅ Overall, the more feedback and status updates you receive AND share with your vendors, the more success you have with placements.
