I left a company once because the Security Director… The Security Director who I had a good relationship with had discussed and agreed that I would have been a good fit for a more senior technical role rather than a SOC Manager. The role in question would have been more in charge of the administration of the security tools (Security Administrator/Engineer). I wanted to move my way up the ladder analyst, engineer, architect rather than manager to director, etc. However one day I found out that he was being let go. My heart sank as I, at the time, felt that my chance to go back to a dedicated technical role was lost. So I left for another company were I applied for a TIER I analyst role, and somehow within two weeks I was offered SOC Manager again. Of course I accepted it, was higher pay, was a new company, and having been a bit salty about the Director situation it was a ticket to move on. With a small team (2 counting myself) I was promised I would still have some technical work. Fast forward a few years, the team grew (not much) and I was quickly being forced out of a hands on keyboard role. I found myself caught up in the day to day work every time, for many reasons. But it hit me. I left a manager role for a technical role that ended up just being another manager role. I learned a lot from the experience, so im not regretting the move, but I went against what I wanted just for an escape. The #lesson here is to not settle, find your path and hold true to what you desire. Dont make rash decisions and stick to what you’re passionate about. Can anyone relate?
