NUPT is an Essential Service for ED's Emergency departments (EDs) are a major point of contact for health care in Canada, with millions of patients visiting each year. EDs are primarily responsible for providing prompt and expert medical treatment to patients with urgent and emergent medical problems, regardless of their severity. Nevertheless, we have observed an increase in ED visits over the years, which is contrary to its purpose. This practice has been characterized as a “misuse” of hospital emergency departments and has several negative consequences, such as overcrowding, increased costs of care, increased staffing costs, long wait times during triage, as well as a reduction in medical investigation resources such as MRI/CT scans, for patients who require it. A Non-Urgent Patient Transport Service (NUPT) is designed to respond promptly and diligently to hospital "transfer-out" requests. The "transfer-out" may involve moving the patient back to a long-term care facility, a residence, another municipality or city, or to another medical facility. There is no doubt that NUPT services have a significant impact on patient flow, which leads to the availability of more beds, a reduction of stress on nurses and doctors, and overall savings in emergency room expenses.

Paramedics in Ontario have been utilizing this technology for years! 🙌 We can only improve our CPR [& patient outcomes] when we are aware of our efficacy with qualitative, real-time data (rate, depth, recoil, etc). An awesome study at St. Mikes! 👏🏼👏🏼 #CPR #emergency #ER #healthcare #healthcareontario #paramedic
A team of clinicians in the St. Michael's Hospital Emergency Department is collecting data to identify ways to improve outcomes for patients who need CPR. Study co-lead Dr. Garrick Mok, Deputy Chief of the department, hopes that by analyzing real-time data about CPR he and his team will be able to make meaningful changes to the way it is delivered. “This will help us drive change to improve care for our patients," said Mok. "The old adage ‘you can’t improve what you don’t measure’ is very true in these cases.” https://bit.ly/3FvpaRi

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a condition that leads to lung scarring, where the scarred tissue obstructs the movement of oxygen from the small air sacs in the lungs into the bloodstream. Low levels of oxygen (and the stiff scar tissue itself) can cause individuals with pulmonary fibrosis to experience shortness of breath, especially during physical activity. Severe respiratory issues may require additional support for independent breathing and require hospitalization. In such cases, an individual may need further treatment beyond the initial hospitalization to fully recover and regain independent breathing. With a team of specially-trained healthcare professionals and a full-time medical director on staff, Ernest Health’s long-term acute care hospitals provide more intensive services to patients than what is provided in a short-stay, acute hospital setting. Our medical teams consist of physicians, nurses, therapists, specialists, pharmacists, and other highly-skilled medical professionals. All patients receive 24-hour nursing and respiratory care services, with daily physician management. #pulmonaryfibrosis #respiratorycare #PFandltachs

The term "CODE BLUE" is widely used in hospitals in the United States to signal a critical medical emergency, usually associated with cardiac arrest. Inside patients' rooms, it is common to find a button designed to activate "Code Blue". When it is activated, the hospital's own emergency response team is immediately mobilized to begin the necessary procedures. As the Primary RN in this situation, you play a crucial role. Your responsibility includes communicating the patient's condition to the team, entering the necessary orders into the medical record system and ensuring that all relevant information is documented. Meanwhile, the emergency team leads the actions needed to stabilize the patient. Here are some of the general functions you might encounter in a Code Blue situation: Code Leader: The person in charge of coordinating the emergency response team. Recorder: Responsible for documenting all actions and events during the code. Compressions: Someone trained to perform chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Defibrillator: The equipment used to administer electric shocks in the case of cardiac arrhythmias. Medications: The administration of medication is essential to reverse critical situations. Other people (Pharmacy, Security, Runner, etc)**: Depending on the situation, other professionals, such as pharmacists, hospital security and messengers, may be called in to help with the emergency. Of course, when you start working in a hospital, you will be trained and familiarized with the procedures specific to your sector in the event of an emergency situation. It is essential to always be prepared and alert to respond effectively to these situations, as rapid intervention can make a difference to patients' lives. Stay alert and committed to the safety and well-being of those you serve. . . . . #CodeBlue #EmergencyResponse #CriticalMedicalEmergency #CardiacArrest #HospitalProcedure #PatientCare #PrimaryRN. #MedicalRecord #EmergencyTeam #CPRTraining #DefibrillatorUse #MedicationAdministration #HealthcareProfessionals #PatientSafety #RapidIntervention #EmergencyPreparedness #CodeLeader #CodeRecorder #ChestCompressions #PatientWellBeing

Patient throughput is an important metric for hospitals - as weak throughput can lead to boarding in emergency departments and patient safety concerns such as hospital-acquired infections when patient lengths of stay are extended beyond medical necessity.
