Don't leave crumbs in your social media marketing efforts, and harness the power of social proof whenever possible. During an interview with a higher-ed CMO, who will remain hidden until the release of Thursday's episode of the Marketing Tales Show, we discussed the value of being tagged by someone on social media. 🎙 If you have followed me for a while, you know that I have nothing but love for my alma mater, the University of Florida Online. 🧡 💙 The following is no reflection on its commitment to its students but rather an example of how even the best of us can leave crumbs. 🙏 I recently interviewed one of my former professors on the show and tagged the university in the episode summary on LinkedIn. There was no engagement, which is fine. Still, the tag was a chance to showcase the relationship students and faculty can build at the institution that goes beyond the borders of the school. 🤝 It's an excellent opportunity for a social proof piece and to educate potential students that university professors genuinely care about their student's success, even after graduation. 🤜 🤛 I dealt with a similar situation when one of our clients wrote a stellar LinkedIn article about our product. 🤩 This sort of content is gold for any company because it validates the messages we push out as marketers to your prospects. A favorable article about your product written by a customer holds much more weight than our messaging. The first thing I did was comment on the post. Then, I shared the post with our network. I asked my colleagues to engage with the client's post. Some even shared it. I contacted the client and asked if I could use the post and add it to our blog page as a guest article, further repurposing the content. The client agreed. 👍 The post ended up in our newsletter, which thousands of people receive. 📩 One article, repurposed multiple times, further social proofing our brand. Implement social listening in your social media marketing efforts. Engage with your audience whenever possible. Always reuse favorable content. And never leave crumbs. For colleges and universities, this is actually a great opportunity to get in front of the students they want to recruit. But just having an account and posting randomly won't cut it. The smart move is to use paid social media advertising. The targeting abilities on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are incredibly powerful. You can get super specific about defining your ideal audience of potential students. Things like their interests, demographic details, even the websites they've visited recently. Instead of just putting a message out there hoping some students see it, you can put your ads directly in front of high school seniors who are already interested in what you offer. It's like reading their minds! But it gets better. You can also reconnect with students who have already shown interest, like visiting your website, through retargeting ads. This keeps your school fresh in their minds as they're deciding where to apply and enroll. Some of the ad options also let you collect contact information right then and there when someone interacts with your ad. This makes it way easier to follow up with interested students instead of juggling random emails and spreadsheets. Of course, just throwing money at paid social media isn't a magic solution. You need a real strategy - smart ad campaigns, creative testing, constant tweaking. But the tools make that process pretty straightforward. So in this digital world, paid social media has to be a core part of your student recruitment plan. Don't just put messages out into the void. Get those super targeted ads in front of the right students at exactly the times when they're making decisions. That's how you'll see your enrollment numbers go up!
