UN Women UK Delegate (CSW 68) | Sussex Uni Recruitment Ambassador | International Education and Development Practitioner | Global Youth Ambassador | Writer | Championing Access, Inclusion & Opportunities in Education.
Today, I attended PIE Live, and the most interesting session I attended was titled "Speed dive: Marketing success in a fragmented social media-driven marketplace." It was this topic that caught my attention and first exposed me to PIE Live. As someone highly interested in international education, having worked as a Digital Marketer, and currently pursuing my Master's in international education at the University of Sussex, I've always wondered what goes on inside the โmindsโ of schools trying to recruit students in a globally competitive market. I've observed some schools with boring social media content, others with Gen-Z vibes only (which may exclude non-Gen Z students seeking further education), some resistant to change or clearly confused about which trends to follow, and others with a cool social media presence that screams MARKETING in capital letters. I've wondered if universities in the global education market truly knew where they were headed and how to utilize social media to attract and convert page visitors into students of their institutions. My primary interest was in institutions subtle use of social media as an effective recruitment platform. Interestingly, Alice McCallum and other speakers in this session provided clarity on how universities can maximize social media for recruitment. According to Alice, universities can start by using their students as โNano and Micro-influencersโ. This is likely to be effective as their followers are like a โfamilyโ to them. Using students as influencers portrays your institution as being authentic. Students are mostly influenced by the experiences of other students. Very true! To address the issue of a boring social media presence, Brazzola mentioned that institutions need to be more daring on social media to achieve their desired results. Brazzola shared how being daring helped her school double the number of engagements on social media and consequently, website clicks in a short time. Gemma, who shared how her institution utilises students as the face of their social media pages has urged other institutions to put students at the center of their advertising. Nathan Monk mentioned how institutions struggled and then navigated SEO when recruitment through the website was the only norm. He implored universities to put in the same and even more effort into their social media marketing. Nalisha Patelโs speech re-emphasized the need for schools to effectively utilize social media to boost their recruitment chances. According to Nalisha, you have to be where the students are to get their attention. Overall, it felt like I was sitting in a strategy meeting, and I loved every bit of it. It was exactly what I signed up for. I am glad I made it to The PIE LIVE. A big thank you to Alice McCallum who let me use her comment section to shoot my shot at PIE Live, and Clare Gossage, who found me worthy to be on the International Student Roundtable. Thank you to you two; you are wonderful!

Week 9โจ The profound impact of social media marketing, recognizing its significance beyond casual content consumption. As a student, I am increasingly aware that social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube offer substantial educational resources. These platforms serve as extensions of the traditional classroom, providing avenues to connect with experts and professionals who willingly share valuable insights, enriching my understanding across various domains. Moreover, I perceive social media as a platform for personal branding. It allows me to curate and showcase content that mirrors my interests, passions, and accomplishments. This deliberate curation not only distinguishes me in academic and professional spheres but also presents an opportunity to explore unexpected avenues. Regardless of whether my focus lies in the arts, sciences, or entrepreneurial pursuits, the interconnected social media landscape serves as an expressive stage where my unique voice finds resonance. Beyond the realm of personal branding, the discussion underscores the cost-effective nature of social media marketing as a dynamic space for skill development. As a student, I am afforded the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiences, experimenting with digital marketing campaigns and gaining practical insights into analytics. This data-driven approach not only informs my academic pursuits but also lays a tangible foundation for prospective careers in the rapidly evolving field of digital marketing. In essence, social media marketing emerges not just as a recreational platform but as a transformative force in my academic journey, personal development, and skill acquisition #HOST1173 Ron Caughlin
