*Help me, I’m broken!* Using procedures to keep people safe from vehicles UG is a broken way to save lives!^ So, UG mining contacts, what systems are you using to stop heavy vehicles running into/ over light vehicles underground? I’m looking for information on systems that *actually* work, not ones that continually false alarm! Systems that don’t need an entire autonomous fleet or really complex and expensive system to operate. The kind that operators would tell you are useful and help them to keep their crew safe. (They may not say those words, they might say “it’s $&*^ alright, mate!”) Does a system like this exist? Please share your experiences! Tagging some experienced folks around the world who might be able to help me out to get the conversation going. Thanks everyone! Troy Newman (PMP, MAICD) Katrina Crook GAICD, FAusIMM CP(Min) Ferrin Prince, PE Jeremy Wolgram Steve Price Peter Klaponski Ian Edgar Damien Hersant (Photo not from any company I’m associated with at present.) ^for those who didn’t pick it up, this is a gross oversimplification, of course we need procedures to say safe. I’m looking to provoke a few responses regarding effective technology.

Reliable perception is crucial for #heavyequipment operators in underground mines to enhance situational awareness and safety as #undergroundmining environments are often challenging, with limited visibility due to low lighting, dust, and tight spaces. At LoopX, we are developing innovative #ai-powered #autonomous solutions to create a safer working environment for mine operators while optimizing mining operations in challenging underground conditions. Following a sim-to-real approach, we are conducting #simulation tests as an essential initial step to validate and fine-tune our autonomous solutions. Once the algorithms show promising results in simulations, the next phase involves conducting real-world tests in an underground mine.

Very interested to see the results of this pilot. While hybrids in the personal auto space can have mixed results, they will have an important role to play as range extenders for cases where electrification is challenging

The mining industry is continually facing critical challenges, including human limitations, labour shortages, and safety incidents. Vehicle collisions and truck rollovers have highlighted serious inefficiencies and safety risks to operators and contractors. In the dynamic landscape of mining, autonomy is more than just another technology; it's the key to redefining efficiency and safety. We believe that beyond the technical intricacies lies a fundamental truth: autonomy will become the catalyst for safer and more efficient mining operations. Our technology is designed to be adaptable to all site and fleet types and for any level of driving autonomy our clients require. With features such as driverless or remote vehicle control, precise path following, task planning, robotic and drive-by-wire actuation, redundant architecture, secure communications, and pedestrian detection (all meeting IEC61508 and ISO17757 safety standards) we deliver safe, reliable, and secure fleet operations. ABD Solutions' mission is to accelerate the transition to autonomy by providing retrofit solutions to automate vehicle fleets rapidly and cost effectively. We believe the benefits of vehicle autonomy should be accessible by all with a vehicle agnostic approach. As an integral part of the AB Dynamics Group, we draw on decades of engineering expertise in the development of autonomous driving and perception technologies to set a new standard for mining innovation. This excellent article really resonates with me. As a computer scientist, I’m not held to the same standards as engineers, and I’ve never been comfortable with that gap. When you study the Challenger disaster, or the death trap design of the 737-MAX MCAS, you find a similar theme. Engineers were ignored or overruled by bureaucratic forces that were more focused on economics than safety. The story of the the Titan fits the same pattern, but in this case Stockton Rush the startup founder overruled Stockton Rush the engineer with disastrous results. How can technical founders ensure that they retain good engineering discipline in the face of the pressure to grow, to profit, and to successfully exit? The risks and the pressure to compromise engineering discipline are always increasing.
