The BBC are reporting a car transporter ship suffering a catastrophic fire in Dutch seas. According to the coastguard it is highly likely this was caused by a single EV battery pack catching fire, with the firefighters struggling to manage the incident, which is expected to burn for days. This makes me contemplate the prospect of similar such incidents in car parks, tunnels, energy storage systems in buildings and elsewhere. Guidance has recently been issued by the shipping regulators recognising these risks in the sector, but the implementation of formal regulations cannot happen soon enough. There were 209 ship fires reported during 2022, the highest number in a decade and 17% more than in 2021, according to a report from insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) The European Maritime Safety Agency said in a March report the main cargo types identified as responsible for “a large share of cargo fire accidents included lithium-ion batteries.” While the shippers, freight forwarders deal with the risk of EV lithium-ion batteries burning with double intensity, the regulators and maritime industry is still playing the catch game with this developing technology and how it presents a greater risk, One hazard in lithium-ion batteries is “thermal runaway,” a rapid and unstoppable increase in temperature that leads to fires in EVs that are hard to extinguish and can spontaneously reignite. Fire extinguishing systems on these ships are not designed to fight these types of fires. With EV’s being the new next best thing, their shipments would only increase exponentially. While IMO could take its sweet time to come out with a regulating mechanism, the underwriters must crack the whip now.
