Having a month dedicated to recognising the contributions Black people have made in the UK is great, but, if we are to see any lasting change, we need more than a month of recognition and acknowledgment; we need a lifetime of changed perceptions. We need RE-COGNITION. The way people see us and sadly the way we even see ourselves needs to change.   It was sad, but hardly surprising, to read recently that we still find ourselves in a position where a majority of 98 per cent stated they have had to compromise who they are or how they express themselves to fit in the workplace.*   The research affirmed what we all know, namely, that attempts to fit-in include changing our attire, speech, and hairstyles are still the norm.  But just because we have got used to something it doesn’t mean that it’s who you are or how it must be.  Normal is not natural.   There’s getting-in and then there’s getting-on.  If we are to get on it is essential to progress without sacrificing who we are. We must always stay true to your identity.  So don’t let anyone take the ‘B’ out of you…. Black.  Take the “b” out of black and you’re left with lack. Even though Black History Month is over that doesn't mean we stop sharing and celebrating the impact Black individuals make in this country. In a research article posted by The Brookings Institution last year, they highlighted the positive economic impact Black-owned businesses have in this country. For example, despite the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Black-owned businesses—SPECIFICALLY Black women-owned businesses—are growing rapidly. In fact, "Black-women-owned employer businesses increased by 18.14% between 2017 and 2020—outpacing women-owned businesses (9.06%) and Black-owned businesses (13.64%)." #blackhistorymonth - This year before you rush out to Target and buy one piece of Black History Month merchandise, I’m going to need you to do the following: * Support your Black co-workers during the oppressive moments, not afterwards at the water cooler * Learn how to center blackness in your research, education, policy making, leadership, politics, and economics * Buy banned books * End the pay gap * Fight for equality in healthcare * Buy from Black owned businesses * Tell State governments to give the 18 land-grant HBCUs the billions of dollars they are still owed * Do your own research regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and who really benefits from DEI (Read the article for more suggestions)
