One of the many avenues of outreach our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers provides is our year round Care Package Distributions to #homeless and less fortunate individuals. Our distributions have been our most consistent #outreach project since 2013. Our amazing #Volunteers organize and execute the distributions, alternating between a mobile distribution and a stationary distribution. Currently, we are blessed with the ability to assist an average of 1,500 people per month; in multiple cities, in multiple states! Our goal with distributions since 2013, has been to provide essential necessities to those in need. Necessities that we may take for granted, are viewed as a luxury to those without. Some of the items we hand out include food, clothing, bottled waters, hygiene items, first aid supplies, socks, shoes, books, seasonal items, and lists of resources available in the area. We also utilize our time in the community, retrieving feedback of needs and issues, by those in need. Engaging with individuals, learning their stories, and providing them with hope and acknowledgement. Our distributions continually evolve. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter named a day in late September as the official “Good Neighbor Day” to encourage Americans to build friendship among their neighbors and spread love and respect throughout their communities. This year, Good Neighbor Day falls on September 28th, and is the perfect opportunity to perform a few acts of kindness to show your appreciation to the people in your neighborhood. Read on for a few ideas on good deeds that you can perform in your community! - Offer to Help a Neighbor with Yard Work - Autumn is around the corner, and you know what that means: lots and lots of leaves! Do your neighbors a favor and offer to help them with raking. This Good Neighbor Day, show your appreciation to your mail carrier by leaving them a gift card to a local business. - Buy Coffee for the Person Behind You at a Local Coffee Shop - Start a “pay it forward” chain at your local coffee shop by asking your barista if you can pay for the person behind you. You can also leave a set amount of money and tell them to use it for customers until it runs out for a simple, yet effective, act of kindness. - Clean Up Trash in Your Neighborhood - Being a good neighbor can be as simple as stopping to pick up a handful of trash on the side of the street! If you have a half hour, take a quiet walk throughout your area and search for any litter that you can pick up and throw away or recycle properly. - Make a Donation to a Community Fundraising Effort - If you’ve seen calls for donations in your neighborhood newsletters or other online groups for a new community garden, pool, or other amenity update — now is the perfect time to get involved! I volunteered at The Hoboken Shelter, and it was an awesome experience. It taught me how even my (1 person) participation can make a difference to those in need, and importantly making things easy for everyone so that people can utilize the services effectively! I spent the day sorting through donations, which included separating three HUGE bags of bread donated by local bakeries. This task involved separating the good bread from the stale. After that, I teamed up with another volunteer and made sure that pastries, soap bars, and other food items were portioned properly so that people could easily collect and use them. Putting hygiene protocols into action makes a difference between people consuming and adhering to them. It’s all about making things easy- not just about access or education. I also helped with behind-the-scenes efforts in washing kitchen towels and aprons for the staff and volunteers. It’s not just help for the needy. This experience taught me how much of a difference even just one person volunteering can make - drops make an ocean. I also learned that one should focus on operations and make things easy for all involved so that adherence is effective. Most importantly, I made friends with other volunteers, and it was overall a fun experience that involved giving back to my community. Make an impact in someone’s life today. Thank you for your generous contributions to Giving Tuesday! Yesterday was a magnificent day of generosity by the community of Grassroots Grocery. On Giving Tuesday, our community truly delivered: - Over $25,000 in donations on a single day! - 48 Giving Ambassadors used their personal platforms to share the movement with their communities - Countless others sharing about a community determined to fight food insecurity. With an inclusive spirit of unity for the greater good. To all, a wholehearted thank you! Giving Tuesday donations have propelled our community well on the way to the goal of raising $100,000, to fight food insecurity and bring the pantry to more people than ever in 2024. That means: - More excess produce rescued–With our new 24-foot truck, we're saving more produce every week - More people served–In the last two months, we’ve gone from serving 1,100 households per week to more than 2,500…and counting! - More people to power the movement–We’ve hired a full-time driver, who’s making daily deliveries into the heart of the community.
