At a high level, your portfolio should showcase your overall skillset. But it should also emphasize specific contributions and competencies depending on your creative discipline and your ideal role. https://bit.ly/3XHTLoZ

A mentor told me the perfect portfolio doesn’t exist. Recruiters don’t need one either. They’d rather see: → An introduction that says name, industry, and background. → No design red flags like poor font pairing or spacing. → Measured outcomes in case studies. → High quality images to accompany your work. → Be able to understand your case study by skimming the headlines

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨? Your portfolio is a living and changing collection of records that reflect your accomplishments, skills, experiences and attributes. It puts you at an advantage over other job applicants who may have education and experience, but no representation of the style and quality of their work. Here’s what to do Make sure it underlines: ♦ Your services and skills ♦ Your industry and niche ♦ Your reliability {ability to meet deadlines, consistency, etc.} Make sure it is: ♦ Easy to update ♦ Self- explanatory if needed ♦ Supports information in your resume ♦ Is specific and occupationally focused Make sure it includes: ♦ An about page ♦ Hard and soft skills ♦ Best samples of work ♦ Any volunteer history ♦ Licenses or certifications ♦ Your major accomplishments ♦ Any awards or honors granted ♦ Testimonials or recommendations Here’s what not to do: Too much of textual content ❌ Remove the fluff, keep the relevant information ✔ Don’t let your design skills overshadow your tools ❌ Optimize your portfolio instead. ✔ Pro tips: 📌 Make it a habit to write down a case study after you complete a project. It explains your understanding, active involvement, your problem-solving skills and the results you were able to drive. 📌 If a lot of your work is online on websites, save PDFs of live web pages of your work. That way, if a website gets updated or pulled down, you still have a record of your work. 📌 To craft a good resume or portfolio, you need power words. These carefully chosen terms have the extraordinary ability to captivate a hiring manager or potential client, conveying your expertise, experience, and capabilities. Did I miss something? P.S. Tell you what. I was going to post this yesterday. After an hour of editing and formatting I accidently clicked the discard option a minute before posting. 🤦♀️ Ever happened to you? _________________________________________ Want to get into more juicy details of building a portfolio? We went through 100 CVs and more than 40 interviews before we could finalise a designer 🤯 It wasn't that they were not skilful, some were senior designers and had a good amount of experience. Some knew the software in and out. But there were some basic problems in almost all of them. 1. Communication & Conceptual Clarity: Understanding the core concept is crucial. Without this, even the best skills can miss the mark. 2. Dependency on References: Mastery of design software is impressive, but reliance on references for designs can hinder creativity. Takes out the freshness. 3. Attention to Detail: We noticed frequent issues with grammar, spacing, and basic design elements, details matter a lot when it comes to designing. Yes, people can be trained but everything happens in its own sweet time not when you are building an agency business early. Nope. Can't afford it. If you are a designer or are looking for one make sure to keep these things in mind. Trust me it will save you so much time :) #AgencyLife #Marketing #Designer

Here's how I used the Credibility Portfolio Technique recently. I wanted to showcase a real-world example from my life. A Credibility Portfolio is a document where you can present your experience beyond the words on resumes and interviews. The analogy I use is of you selecting a wedding photographer. * Photographer 1 comes in and talks about the beautiful photos she will take. * Photographer 2 uses a beautiful portfolio to flip through the beautiful photos she has taken and will take for you. Which one are you choosing? Number 2, of course. Then why would you only depend on your resume to do the talking? -- So, why is my sharing this portfolio essential for you today? Before I share, let me add some quick context. This portfolio was for a F500 client I have worked with for years. So I am okay with many pictures on one slide, results without much context, industry acronyms, and more text since it was to be shared internally. If I were to present this live to a fresh audience, I would do it differently. (Less text, 1-2 images per slide, 1 takeaway per slide) Having said that, what I have learned over the years and implemented in this presentation is the following: 1. Executive summary -- Give busy executives the takeaway right away 2. Table and graphs should be internalized in a few seconds 3. Social proof of my technical publications & seminars 4. Why-How-What of the case-studies 5. Images and plots to add richness This should give you an example of how to build your credibility portfolio -- whether for your experience at a high level or a 3-slide one for a specific project. Good luck 💪🏽 *** Repost ♻ to help someone level up their job search.

💡 Here's something you may not have tried before... If you have a portfolio of your work, of course, include the link at the top of your resume. BUT How about taking it one step further? ✨ Hyperlink relevant parts of your resume to specific projects WITHIN your portfolio Link to their specific webpages, Or create an anchor link to a specific portfolio section. Now instead of an employer blindly walking through your portfolio, You're leading them. It makes a huge difference 💯 Physically and energetically. Exude confidence in every step of the job search. #productdesigner #UXdesigner #personalbranding #portfolio #Creatives

Empathy. If you're designing a human-centred product, experience, process for your customers, you must first seek to understand them, their needs, desires, and problems and you need empathy to do it. Therefore when writing job descriptions or job advertisements where human-centred is featured...be sure to highlight empathy as a requirement. #empathyindesign #humancentereddesign #productdesign

Is creating an online portfolio worth it? I think so, and here’s why… 1️⃣ Creating a portfolio helps generate credibility by showing others your work and what you are capable of. 2️⃣ When employers see a portfolio, it sets you apart from other candidates. 3️⃣ Portfolios help tell your professional narrative in a compelling way. If your interested in seeing an example of a portfolio, here’s one that I created through Wix: https://lnkd.in/g5xasGTN
