Despite a subdued M&A market in Africa, the energy sector is witnessing a resurgence driven by domestic deals. With multiple transactions valued at over $500 million, a trend expected to continue into 2024, the continent's energy sector remains a focal point for investment. As international players rebalance their portfolios, domestic entities are emerging as key players in Africa's energy transformation. Nigeria's recent oil and gas M&A deals exemplify this trend, signaling a shift towards intra-Africa investments. We recognize the significance of this shift. The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) says it plans to support Nigeria’s power sector with one billion dollars to boost electricity. Dr Kevin KARIUKI, Vice President, Power, Energy, Climate Change and Green Growth Complex, AfDB, said at the Eight Africa Energy MarketPlace (AEMP) Forum in Abuja. The forum was organised by AfDB, the Ministry of Power and the United Kingdom Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Facility (UKNIAF). Kariuki said: "We will be shortly seeking board approval for a one billion dollar policy-based operation (PBO) with a significant energy component. This is aimed at supporting the ongoing power sector reforms triggered by the new Electricity Act. The timing of the AEMP and the proposed policy-based lending focused on the energy sector is, therefore, not coincidental. “We will finance the policy recommendations to actualise the expected outcomes from the National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan.” He said that good policies attracted sustainable investments, adding that an enabling environment would maximise the value of ongoing investments, including the 256.2 million dollars Nigeria Transmission Expansion Project. According to him, the project entailed the construction of 500 Kilometres (KM) of transmission lines and four substations with a capacity of over 1000 Mega Volt Ampree (MVA). The Federal Government has approved a $750M USD World Bank funding for the construction of 1,200 mini-grids in rural communities across Nigeria. The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed this Tuesday while addressing newsmen at the Alliance for Rural Electrification Energy Access Forum held in Lagos. According to Aliyu, President Bola Tinubu approved the fund for the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up project, which aimed at providing energy access to Nigerians in rural communities. Aliyu noted that about 19 million of the 85 million Nigerians without access to energy would be provided electricity under the scheme. While noting that Nigeria has the highest electricity gap in the world, Aliyu stated that the Federal Government was doing a lot to bridge the gap. Exciting News for Energy Efficiency in Nigeria! The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), in collaboration with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), supported by the Clean Cooling Collaborative, has launched a review of the country’s Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for air conditioners. Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, SON's Director-General, emphasized the significance of this initiative at a recent technical committee review in Abuja. Nigeria aims to combat climate change, enhance its global reputation, and attract international investments by setting new standards. This move underscores Nigeria's commitment to energy efficiency, targeting reduced greenhouse gas emissions and fostering sustainable growth. Last year, SON commissioned an AC testing chamber in Lagos to ensure all products meet quality and efficiency standards, helping consumers save on energy costs.
