Good morning everyone, today I’m seeking your opinion on a proposal which I’ve recently come across in the Financial Times. In times of rising political instability and risk, an FT article written by Camilla Cavendish, former head of the Downing Street policy unit under Prime Minister David Cameron, elaborated on the function of a so-called “Chief Political Officer” (CPO). Particularly companies with cross-border business activities are advised to install such function to succeed in the ever-evolving complex business landscape in times of geopolitical tensions and regulatory changes. According to the article, in today's interconnected world, having a dedicated CPO can significantly enhance an organization's ability to navigate regulatory frameworks, anticipate policy changes, and effectively manage government relations. By actively engaging with government agencies and policymakers, organizations can contribute to shaping policies that promote economic prosperity. The role of a Chief Political Officer is emerging as a strategic imperative to proactively address political challenges and maximize opportunities (!). Organizations that prioritize the establishment of a CPO role and invest in building strong relationships with the public sector will have a distinct advantage in navigating the complexities of today's political landscape and unlocking new avenues for growth. Let's foster a discussion on this topic! I would love to hear your thoughts on the emergence of the Chief Political Officer role and the importance of strengthening relationships with the public sector. #PublicSectorEngagement #ChiefPoliticalOfficer #GovernmentRelations #StrategicPartnerships

It seems to me that we are living in a period where governments and regulatory bodies are rapidly taking over functions and decision making from citizens and companies, and that they get used to intervene "spontaneously" in so far free markets, at least in my country. We hear that polticians "know better" and want to "protect people from making the wrong decisions". In such context, it may be good for companies to have strong links to politics and politicians. It is about following them in a fast changing framework rather than leading.

Houston, we could have a problem ... We really need to start seeing the world the way it is AND not the way we are. The 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer has just been released this week. It's well worth a read. This years report has unearthed a compelling conundrum at the core of our societal structure. On the one hand, this era's swift technological advancements herald a potential golden age of wealth and progress. However, they also pose a significant threat by potentially intensifying underlying trust issues, ... potentially fuelling societal unrest and escalating political divisions. In what is pivotal year, with half the world's populace poised to elect new leadership, embracing innovation becomes crucial for our societal advancement. The report also finds that there's a growing apprehension about political interference in scientific matters, and this perception is eroding trust in the very institutions tasked with navigating us through these transformative times. We live in very interesting times. #edelmantrustbarometer #useyournoggin #progress #innovation

Founder @ Victoria Intelligence | Empowering companies to use intelligence to mitigate risk and maximise opportunity
In the first 6 weeks of 2024 as I continue to grow Victoria Intelligence I think I’ve spoken with more new people than in the past 6 years (which has been amazing btw). Something I’ve noticed from speaking to those outside the intel and security space, is that they sometimes feel overwhelmed with geopolitics and don’t know where to start to understand new or emerging stories from an unfamiliar country. As someone who has made a career of getting up to speed on new countries and geopolitical issues fast so I can advise businesses, I thought I’d share the way I’ve approached this. 🌏 If I knew nothing - I’d start with a high level overview of the history of the country from something like the CIA World Factbook (and ideally more in-depth history/politics books in tandem). 📰 For neutral reporting, I’d read BBC news or Reuters. But I’d quickly find I’d need to go deeper so I’d identify local news sources - these will not only give me more on the ground knowledge, but also help me understand how issues are being reported and positioned to those in the country. I’d be mindful of biases or political leanings, because while it’s not necessarily a problem to read sources who have an angle or agenda - I’d just want to be clear on what it was. 👩🏫 I’d find knowledgeable commentators or journalists and follow them on X (or wherever they’re posting). This can be tricky because how do I know if they’re knowledgeable when I’m not? I’d look for experts attached to reputable news outlooks or think tanks (e.g. Chatham House or International Crisis Group) and then I’d look at sources they’re sharing and interacting with and follow them, aiming to get a range of backgrounds and expertise. 📺 Watch documentaries or videos - it might sound obvious, but seeing a country or the individuals involved helps me understand it in a different way to just reading about it. 🎧 Podcasts are an easy way to stay/keep informed when I’m in transit or running errands. As with all sources, I’ll do some research to understand their actual level of knowledge and any biases they may have. 🎬 If I want to further understand a country but I can’t go there? I’ll look for films and tv shows made there (not just set there). I’ll read books by local authors, listen to music by local musicians and try to find local comedians. Obviously there is the issue of things being lost in translation sometimes, but it’s still always been a valuable exercise for me. This is just my approach, and I’m not saying it instantly makes me an expert on a country, but it’s helped me improve my knowledge. I’d love to hear how others approach the same challenge!
