I recently discussed The END Fund's mission to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) with Devex. We highlighted the need to integrate more African voices into our advocacy work, the importance of collaboration with governments and donors, and the significant NTD burden in Africa, which impacts over 40% of the 1.7 billion people affected worldwide. I’ve shared a link to the article below. https://lnkd.in/e9n5wdkX #ENDNTDs #GlobalHealth #EmpowerCommunities

Following the UN General Assembly High-level Meeting on the fight against tuberculosis in September 2023, UN Member States adopted a Political Declaration, which outlines targets and commitments for fast-tracking progress towards TB elimination by 2027. In light of the Political Declaration adopted by UN Member States, strengthening intersectoral cooperation and accountability is essential to achieving global goals and commitments. Civil society organizations and TB-affected communities play a crucial role in catalyzing these processes at the country level and actively participating in them. To ensure that your participation is meaningful and active, take the first step by reading the text of the UN HLM Political Declaration on TB 2023 – the cornerstone of international strategy for TB control over the next 5 years! The document is available in 7 languages, including English and Russian. "The shift in transmission dynamics and the prevalence in at-risk groups is reminiscent of the historical emergence of the HIV AIDS epidemic that was originally postulated to have transferred over from monkeys to humans..." The authors make a very important parallel to HIV. Although a vaccine, https://lnkd.in/eGtg7QDv, exists for mpox, it is inaccessible to these populations and not included in the strategies here. For how long shall we talk about global health strategies without equity.
“…..the possibility of cross-border transmission (of mpox), initially in Uganda given the porosity of borders, remains high because of informal workers around mines and increased mass movement arising from insecurity. In 2022 alone, over 60 000 refugees crossed into Uganda from DR Congo and this mass movement continues.”

#YearInReview: In a significant milestone, Guinea Bissau became the first African Union Member State to establish an Integrated End Malaria and NTD Council to boost domestic resource mobilisation for both diseases. To address the current funding shortfall for #malaria control and elimination and chronic underfunding of #NTD programs, we must urgently rally communities, political leaders, and private businesses to back innovative funding initiatives to #endmalaria and #BeatNTDs.

🌍 Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the UN Africa Check workshop. This event highlighted the crucial need for fact-checking in our rapidly evolving digital world. In an era where information spreads in seconds, distinguishing between truth and falsehood is vital. 🔍 Did you know there's a difference between disinformation and misinformation? Misinformation is when false information is shared without harmful intent – it's a mistake. Disinformation, however, is the deliberate spread of false information to deceive. Both can have serious repercussions, affecting everything from public health to political decisions, and death, like the early 2000's when false information was shared against the polio vaccine. We were on the brink of eradicating polio people! Lives were lost due to that particular piece of disinformation. Relationships can also be affected if you're a particularly bitter individual that tend to take simple words out of context to justify victim-like, conflict driven behaviour. The workshop reinforced how easily false information can create real-world impacts. It's a reminder for all of us to pause and verify before sharing. As responsible netizens, it's up to us to curb the spread of falsehoods. 📢 Let's commit to being more critical of the information we encounter and share. It's not just about fact-checking; it's about protecting the fabric of our society. Together, we can make a difference! #FactCheck #InformationLiteracy #UNAfricaCheck
