Today, it's heavily driven by engineering, data, and an endless parade of endorsements. The beauty and charm that once defined luxury items seem overshadowed by a focus on brand names and materialistic value. I miss the days when luxury was synonymous with sheer beauty. Icons like Leonardo Da Vinci and Christian Dior didn’t rely on data to create timeless masterpieces. Dior’s 1954 pencil skirts weren’t just garments; they were celebrations of femininity, crafted to magnify beauty as per Dior’s own vision of the 'tall letter H'. As we navigate through this ever-changing world, let’s not lose sight of what truly matters. Today, we’re looking not only at funky shaped Cartier Baignoires in white and rose gold, but models that are seldom seen at all! Everyone and their mother in the watch industry know about the Cartier Crash, one of Cartier’s most famous and coveted models that are worn by A list celebrities and the rich. It’s a great, chic look that implies you know what you’re doing and you got six figures to spend on it! Anyways, these Baignoires that are quite similar in shape to the Crash are significantly less in price. They trade between the low twenty’s- to mid thirties currently, but with how the market is blowing up with Cartier (2024 will really be Cartier’s year), this specific model is expected to go up. We were lucky to source a quartz example in white gold (the left) at IWJG in Miami, a dealer only trade show. Of course, I wish I had access to more of these examples as I would put some away in the safe and wait for the values to SKYROCKET. Many other collectors/ dealers that have been doing this longer than I have been alive recommended to keep at least one at this rate. Who would of thought that both the niche and mainstream watch market would catch on to odd shapes in precious metals, but it’s well deserved. Cartier is informally known as the “king of shapes”, it was long overdue. The demand is so strong that other dress watches are benefiting from it as well. Question: What would you do if you were a luxury brand with 1 million Euros to burn on a Christmas tree? Answer: Start with the notion of the Christmas tree, but strip it completely of all its noble connotations and build in its place a pile-up of boxes with a rather monolithic aesthetic dedicated to vulgar shameless branding. And if you can, do that in one of the most elegant locations in Europe to make the contrast painful. Well, to spread the Christmas cheer, that's exactly what happened this year in the elegant Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. Gone is the normally beautiful Christmas tree that since 2014 was curated by SWAROVSKI. Instead, in its place lies a conical assembly of 78 Gucci boxes in an installation that some described as a "pile of Linate luggage" (the city's airport). And that's one of the more kind comments in circulation ... It seems that this year, the city of Milan instead opted for a non-Tree with a singular vacuous message: Just think of Gucci. Gosh... In response to yesterday's post (link in comments), Debs Lewis raised a question about exclusivity. This is a trendy word often used by luxury companies in their communications. It justifies high prices and creates the illusion that you own something special. For example, Louis Vuitton continuously showcases their old trunks in exhibitions across various cities, allowing free visits to remind us how mass-produced canvas tote bags became "luxury" items now priced (almost) at $2,000. I'd like to share my opinion on what true luxury is. This example illustrates the fundamentals: expensive and rare materials, incredible workmanship, limited quantities, and long production times. Please see the picture below: The object (vase): "A spray of forget-me-nots in gold, with flowers in turquoise and diamonds, leaves in nephrite, and a vase in rock crystal. "Made as one piece. There is no water in the vase :)) Faberge workshop, 1912. We can easily find more contemporary examples, but I particularly like the flowers:) This is an exclusive luxury.
