In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the restaurant industry faced a significant downturn. I found myself navigating these challenges as a General Manager during that tumultuous period – and truth be told, it's still a challenging landscape. However, what proved to be my anchor during these trying times were my mentors. Interestingly, I hadn't personally met or interacted with these mentors in a digital realm. Instead, I sought guidance through the pages of countless books, delving into the world of business during the pandemic. Among the volumes that resonated most with me – and ones I believe can offer valuable insights as we approach 2024 – are the following: "Setting the Table" by Danny Myers: Myers skillfully deconstructs the essence of hospitality, focusing on how one can truly impact the way people feel. Through what he calls Enlightened Hospitality he shows how going the extra mile can make a real impact in your business. "Made from Scratch" by Kent Taylor: Taylor takes readers on a journey through the creation of Texas Roadhouse. In this candid account, he shares both triumphs and setbacks, providing a roadmap that allows you to learn from his experiences and avoid repeating similar mistakes. These books were instrumental in shaping my perspective and strategies during the challenging times brought about by the pandemic.
